I have always been interested in beauty and skin care dating back to High School. Sadly, when I look in the mirror today, I no longer see the soft, wrinkle free face of a 16 year old! I recently came to the realization that some of the products I’ve been using needed updating! My skin has changed over the past 20 years.
But how on earth would I find a luxurious amount of time to devote to a complex skin care regime!? Sadly, wrinkles and sun damage aren’t going to prevent themselves! After testing many (many!) products over the past two years, I’ve finally settled into a skin care routine that’s right for my 36 year old skin and doesn’t take up much of my time! Here are some of my must have products and top skin care tricks. I’ve tested products and done all of the research so you don’t have to!
Find a Great Dermatologist
A great dermatologist is key to your skin care for many reasons. For the fair of skin, such as myself, it can literally be a matter of life and death. Skin cancer is commonplace in my family so I prioritize annual skin exams. We grew up in the era of baby oil and tanning beds which have caused irreprehensible damage. Do yourself a favor and have your dermatologist examine your skin, especially if you notice anything suspicious!
Your dermatologist can also act as a sounding board for your skin care questions and concerns. There is a reason why all of their receptionists have flawless skin! Dermatologists are a wealth of knowledge and can recommend the best products for your exact skin type. If you are interested in procedures like Botox and fillers, they can recommend safe and effective ways to smooth out those pesky wrinkles. Just be prepared that beauty is never cheap!
My mother taught me at an early age to wear a daily lotion with SPF. (Thanks Mom!) I considered myself ahead of the game, until recently when my dermatologist pointed out that I wasn’t doing enough! The SPF 15 lotion that I was using was insufficient! On her advice, I switched to a formula with SPF 40 that doesn’t dry out my skin (as some SPF lotions are known to do).
Elta MD UV Daily Moisturizing face cream $26.50 @ Dermstore.com
The same rule can be applied to your body lotion. SPF 30 or above is the most effective for preventing burns and in turn preventing skin cancer. Make sure you and your little ones are properly protected.
Babyganics SPF 50 Sunblock $12.99 @ Target
Since the birth of my twins my skin has been drier then the Sahara Desert. Blame it on changing hormones (or lack of sleep!). I have had to step up my moisturizing game drastically! As my husband can attest there are currently 5-10 moisturizing lotions taking up real estate in our medicine cabinet. I am constantly looking for the best one! Below is a Clinique Moisturizer that I love! Slather on a heavy dose before getting a good night’s sleep (or any sleep your kids will allow for!).
Clinique Moisture Surge Intense Moisturizer $39 @ Sephora
Serums are new to me and have only been introduced into my routine recently. It’s an added step for those who are looking to go the extra mile in their daily routines. Face serums are lightweight moisturizers that penetrate deep to deliver active ingredients into your skin. They contain a high concentration of ingredients so you have to make sure that the formula addresses your specific skin concerns. As my main concern is anti-aging I’ve chosen a serum with Vitamin C. Vitamin C not only boosts collagen but also serves as an antioxidant to protect your skin against wrinkle causing toxins!
Ole Henricksen Truth Serum $48 @ Sephora
Although I have tested out some fancy eye creams in my day, I keep going back to my favorite eye hack; Vaseline. I use Vaseline every night to take off my eye makeup and have been doing so for many years (again, thank you Mom!). I also pat it on my lids and under eyes directly before bedtime. It really does help to moisturize the delicate skin around my eyes and prevents crow’s feet!
Vaseline $4.29 @ Target
I am also always on the hunt for the perfect concealer. I never had the need for concealer until becoming a tired Mama. A good night’s sleep may not always be possible but it can easily be faked! A lot of concealers crease or crack under my eyes so I need a formula with a little extra moisture. Below is one that I’m testing out. Any other favorites I should try?
Tarte Maracuja Concealer $26 @ Sephora
Exfoliate and Cleanse
I am currently in a 12-step program to curb by addiction to exfoliating! I LOVE the way my skin feels after a good exfoliating session, smooth and tight, but I’ve learned my lesson and now proceed with caution! Exfoliating too often can strip away the protective barrier your skin needs and dry it out. I now restrain myself to only exfoliating 2-3 times a week.
Clarisonic Cleansing Brush $99.99 @ Bed Bath & Beyond
When choosing a cleanser keep this same theory in mind. Too many exfoliating properties can dry out your skin. What works best for me is a gentle, sensitive formula. This face wash is from a natural beauty line created by a local mom just over the border in South Salem NY!
Indie Lee Rosehip Cleanser $32 @ Dermstore.com
Facials are a real treat for my tired mama skin. I only have the time and resources to go twice a year, so when I do, I make sure it’s worth it! Fairfield County Moms Blog sponsor, Nefaire Spa in Westport is a great spot for a facial. They use organic products that leave your skin feeling fresh and clean. They even teach you how to make your own products such as their Honey Sugar Scrub! Check out our upcoming “Spa Night Out” for a chance to get pampered!
As a busy working mom my “me” time is nearly obsolete. Sometimes my 20 minutes of morning bathroom time can feel like a trip to the spa! Taking care of my skin is important to me. Hopefully someday my 60 year old self will be grateful for the effort!
