New Year’s Resolutions: Why I’m Not Making Any

This year, my only New Year’s Resolution is to not make any. It’s nice to have a clean slate, but every time I focus too much on a goal and make tons of resolutions, it only back fires. I’m sitting here with a fractured ankle writing this post. So much for trying to exercise and be healthy. Who knew tennis shoes are actually important?

All of this was the result of an ankle roll during tennis.

Every year, I resolve to finally lose the extra weight I’ve been carrying around since a miscarriage in 2012. This year, I am not going to drive myself crazy. I may never be a size ten again and that’s going to have to be all right.

Two years ago, I resolved to be one of those perfect Instagram moms. It cost me a broken wrist trying to ice skate with my girls. I learned that my kids love me more when I can interact with them and not stuck in bed with something that resembles cheese on my arm.

I’m not going to join Weight Watchers again just to be done with it in March. I’m going to eat healthy, because I like to, and also indulge in dessert sometimes. Everything in moderation.

I’ll continue to exercise doing the activities that make me happy. If I skip, I’ll give myself a pass instead of letting my inner monologue beat me down. Maybe I won’t run a half marathon, but I’ll start walking, and maybe jog, when my foot is up to it.

This year I’m not going to try to be better, or perfect – rather, I’m going to accept that being me is good enough. As a mom of two girls, that’s the message I want to send.

In the end, I’m just mommy to them; they don’t see my imperfections. They love me for who I am inside. I want them to know that as long as they try their best, that’s all that matters. No one should try to be someone they aren’t in order to be liked. Chances are, when you think everyone is looking at you, they aren’t because they are thinking about their own issues.

So if you’re going to make any resolutions this year, I urge you to resolve to love yourself.

What are your New Year’s Resolutions for 2017?
