When Kiddo Becomes Daddy

Unlike I had thought, being a father is different than having parents.  I kind of thought it would just be a big bunch of love thrown around without a lot of upkeep.  Well, we’ve got the love but WOW do kids need involvement!  I kind of liken it back to when I got my first guitar.  My parents said that I needed to pay for about a half of it with my savings so that I was invested in it and valu10374526_10204235727807826_7733734092211778835_ned its worth more as I learned to use it.  In a similar way, if I didn’t invest so much of myself in my kids I’m sure I’d miss out on the level of love I have for them.  So in short: hands-on parenting has been how I’ve really been able to relate to the kids.  It doesn’t hurt that I think they’re super cute and funny, too!

Also, unlike I had thought, being a father makes me closer with the rest of my family.  I can relate to how my parents had to work hard themselves, both directly (such as changing diapers) and indirectly (such as IMG_5238working to earn a living) to bring me up, and how that shaped our relationship.  It makes me want to enjoy the time I have with my kids more right now (before they have a chance to potentially get rebellious!).  Even my brother, who went very counter-culture and struck out with his own lifestyle, has come to want to be a part of our family again.

So I guess it’s funny how life can turn out how you said you’d like it to, but once you get there you realize it’s a completely different adventure!

Happy Father’s Day!
