Two Questions and You Have a Business

Making a business plan.VentureMom is so excited to be writing for FCM. I started VentureMom to inspire moms to create a business venture around something they already do.

In January, everyone starts to think about goals for the New Year, and many of those plans are centered around starting your own business. Here at VentureMom, we hear from so many moms who started successful ventures around something they were already doing in their lives. So this month, let’s talk about creating a service venture. Look at your life and ask yourself two questions:

What do I do well?

What skill do I have that others would pay me for?

Most moms have something they do right now that they can structure a business around. You have to figure out what your skill is. Get some feedback from friends and family. Ask others what they would pay you for. Are you great at accessorizing bookshelves, arranging furniture, or picking paint colors? That could be a “Use What You Have Decorating Service.”  Maybe you’re awesome at organizing photos and making photo books. You can charge others for that service.

Remembering something that comes as second nature to you may be extremely difficult for someone. Maybe you are great at balancing checkbooks and paying bills. You could offer a monthly bill pay service or offer to set others up with online bill pay.

For example, if you offer to help someone with their bills, meet with them for a half hour with a list of questions that will help you tell them how you can work with them. Then you can explain how you work and what you charge. You could charge a one-time setup fee of $75 and then $50 a month to pay all their bills for them.

In January, moms want to get organized and start new projects, whether getting their photos organized, planning family trips, or cleaning out their basements. These are all things you can build a service venture around. Decide what you’ll offer, come up with a price per hour and email everyone you know. Tell the group what you are offering and how much you charge.

Maybe you are a great dresser and want to offer closet and styling help. You could offer a half-hour free consultation to review what the client has in her closet and give her a set price for a style meeting. This could be a two-hour try-on session where you put together outfits that look best on the client and suggest essential items she needs to complete her wardrobe. Not everyone realizes that a great pair of black boots can take them everywhere.

There are so many great ideas. Look at what you do well that other women would like help with as the new year begins. Take a look at VentureMom.com to get other ideas and see how VentureMoms have structured its service ventures. What better time to start a new venture than January.
