Have you ever been curious about how focus groups work? I have always wanted to do a focus group, and recently I had the chance to work with our newest partner, RazorFocusLocated in downtown Stamford, RazorFocus is owned by two previous marketing and advertising industry executives, Paul and Leny Jacobson, who purchased the then 7 year-old business in the summer of 2012. Leny had been a very engaged stay at home mom for the previous 15 years, while Paul had been working in the market research consulting business for the last 17 years when they decided to take the plunge.

The following year, Connie Sinnaeve – Leny’s close friend and also a former senior advertising executive, joined the management team as Senior Manager. Both of these Wilton-based former ad execs, turned stay-at-home moms, turned business women love what they do and want to reach out to other area moms about a great opportunity to earn some extra money and periodically receive free products for participating in RazorFocus market research projects.

To do so, moms must first become a RazorFocus database member, which can be done by completing a short (5-10 mins) online survey located at www.razorfocus.com. Once the registration has been completed, you only need to check your email or wait for a phone call, to be included in one of the many paying market research projects that RazorFocus facilitates for their clients, who represent countless consumer and business-to-business categories.

These companies want candid feedback from consumers on a host of different topics, including brand equity and brand loyalty studies, new product development, new advertising/new website evaluations, and taste tests of a wide range of foods and beverages.

While their studies involve all different types of people, Leny and her team know well that moms are where the money is. Finally someone understands the buying power of a mom! They are frequently searching for moms to test out sippy cups, bottles, gadgets, and toys. Speaking of toys, RazorFocus also runs kids groups where they can try out new toy ideas! (Don’t worry, they first interview parents/guardians before speaking with any children.) RazorFocus works hard to cultivate a broad database of respondents to match their clients’ wide ranging needs – whether Legos, designer shoes, or anything in between.

The research is conducted in many different ways: in a group setting in the office, a one-on-one interview at your home, and one format that sounded most intriguing, SHOPPING with a researcher alongside you. Regardless of which scenario you are in, you receive compensation – usually cash for sharing your thoughts and opinions. Your honorarium could be anywhere from $75-$250 depending on the time commitment (typically 60-120 minutes) and the topic. On occasion some of the studies will require a little “homework” to be completed in advance of the research, like making a collage of images and words to express your feelings about a specific subject.

So, what are you waiting for? Join their database and share your thoughts and feelings for some easy cash, a fun way to meet new people, and even network for when you’re ready to move to the next stage of your career!

Maria Sette
Maria is a full-time mom, teacher, wife, daughter, and sister, who feels pulled in too many directions! Her older son Michael took over 24 hours to be born, and at six-months-old was diagnosed with allergies to dairy, eggs, nuts, soy, shrimp, and wheat…all after exclusively nursing because she was SO SURE that would help him be a healthy kid. Luckily at age 1, he began to outgrow some of his allergies. Fingers crossed the others will soon follow because that plus a husband who doesn’t eat any veggies and Maria always battling her weight makes for three meals to prepare every night. Luckily, Christopher, her younger son, is a cooperative eater! As someone who has always been committed to making positive change, Maria uses her privilege and position as an educator and mom to work toward a most anti-racisit, equitibile, and inclusive world. Recently, Maria has even started getting up at 5am to workout in her basement. (Thank you pandemic living!) She is addicted to reading chicklit on her Kindle app in the dark, most Trader Joe’s products, and watching TikToks.
