Let’s talk about self-care and skincare. Here are some fantastic DIY skincare tips, recipes, and treats.

Have you ever wondered if you can find a substitute for your favorite products? Here are some ideas to help you look and feel your best while staying at home. So let’s take a look at what pantry items we may have on hand that just may surprisingly help us look and feel spa fresh.

We will work our way from top to bottom:

Hair

I don’t have much hair, sporting this bald/low cut saves me in the hair department; however, for my friends with long hair, dry shampoo can come to the rescue. For this, we can use arrowroot powder and corn starch. A friend even told me about using baking soda. (Please note baking soda may be a little drying on the scalp).

Dry Shampoo:

  • 1/4 cup Arrowroot powder or cornstarch

To personalize this based on hair type, adding a bit of cacao powder or cinnamon for darker hair may help to cut down on the white residue. A few drops of essential oils for the oily mamas have benefits as well.

Face

Here are some face mask recipes with very simple, easy to get ingredients:

Honey, Cinnamon & Lemon Juice

  • 2 Tablespoon
  • 1 teaspoon
  • Lemon juice from a small wedge

Honey, Avocado & Olive Oil

  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 tablespoons avocado (leftovers?)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Mix all the ingredients together, apply to face for a mask, and leave on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry. Follow up with your regular moisturizer.

Feet

Coffee, Brown Sugar and Coconut Oil – Foot Scrub

  • 1/4 cup (save your leftover coffee grounds from your morning cup)
  • 1/3 cups of brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil

Hands

Lemon Sugar Hand Scrub

  • Fill 2/3 of a small jar with sugar
  • 1/3 or 1/4 coconut oil or olive oil
  • 1 Lemon

Mix sugar and oil together slowly for a wet sand-like consistency, then add the juice of one lemon (surely you can use concentrate if you have it on hand). Massage on hands for gentle exfoliation, follow up with your favorite hand cream or coconut oil.

Mind

Find a small pot or slow cooker: add in some vanilla, cinnamon, star anise (simmer on low heat and allow the aroma to fill your space).

Not very sustainable; however, from your bathroom, turn on your shower head and create a sauna. (hand a few mint leaves or rosemary to give a crisp, clean smell).

Pantry List:

  • Arrowroot powder
  • Avocado
  • Cacao Powder
  • Cinnamon
  • Coconut Oil
  • Cornstarch
  • Honey
  • Lemon
  • Olive Oil
  • Sugar (Brown/White)
  • Star Anise
