Our Favorite Things

The Toys R Us big book of toys has already arrived, and the house is a buzz with ideas for what Santa should bring.  And just an FYI, it will never be a live horse, Miss L! Finding the right toys that they will continue to play with for more than a season isn’t easy. As I reflect on the gifts that have continued to be treasured by both son and daughter, I give you a list of our family’s favorite things.

Wooden Dollhouse:  Santa brought this house when my daughter was two and it has become a fixture inphoto (3) our living room. Furnished with Loving Family appliances, chairs and such that can be moved in and out, my two year old son can spend a good half-hour tinkering around. And (gasp!) the two of them even play with it together.

puppetPuppet Theater and Puppets: Our puppet theater is the go to activity when friends come to play. Folkmanis make the best puppets that look like real animals, and the variety of choices is endless. Adding puppets to the collection make for great gift ideas for aunts and grandparents.

Plastic Animals: My 6 year old daughter has always been a lover of animals, and she can spend hours in imaginary play with her whole entourage of plastic giraffes, tigers, and elephants. Little brother is happy to get her leftovers without too many tears and brings his own set of dinosaur pals to the playtime fun.

Don’t Break the Ice: This game is one of the few that both 2 year old and 6 year dbtiold can play together. It takes longer to set up than it does to play, but I love that it has become an old time favorite for both children.

Bucket of Mr. Potato Heads: Even mama likes to play around with these. The bucket includes a cat and dog!

kitchenPlay Kitchen and Cash Register: My parents bought my daughter her play kitchen a few years ago and with the added gifts of cash register and shopping cart, children of all ages enjoy playing house and store in our playroom.

What are some of your favorite things? Please share with us some gifts that were really a big hit and for what age!

Shannon
Shannon has lived in Fairfield County, CT for most of her life and currently lives in Monroe. She has a daughter L (September, 2008) and a son B (May, 2012). Shannon balances being a wife and mom with working 186 days out of the year as a special education teacher. Thank goodness for vacations, summer break, and snow days! You can be sure that she fills those days with as many amazing activities and outings that she can think of to make up for the time that she is at work. In a distant life, way before babies, Shannon was an aspiring actress and musician. You can sometimes still find her leading sing-a-longs with her guitar at the kids’ playgroups or at her daughter’s school.
