One Evening with Caitlin {A Photo Essay Series}

“One Evening” is a photo essay series that provides a sneak peek into the everyday lives of the Fairfield County Moms Blog contributors. The evening routine is photographed by Anna-Liisa Nixon Photography and words are written by each mom to tell the story behind the images. It’s a rare and intimate look into each family’s life, one evening at a time.

Ready…Set…GO!

Life with two babies is like running a marathon that never ends. The days are long, some nights are longer, and every ounce of energy is burned by 8 a.m. When I was pregnant with my second child I often wondered how I would do it. In fact, I was often asked, “How are you going to do it?” The truth is I didn’t know…and I still don’t.

When we get home from work, an entirely new work day starts. So what is life like in my house between the hours of 5 and 7 p.m.? Have you ever been to a circus? Flying monkeys, tight rope walkers, people swinging from trapezes? That’s the best way I can describe those hours. However; from an outsider looking in, I bet they’d see a family doing their best to keep it all together.

Luckily, my husband and I are the perfect team. We divide and conquer and pray we make it to bedtime. Take a peek…

And the race begins: Dinner Time

I am an avid believer in sitting down for a family meal every night. However; I have a strict rule that I will cook Monday through Thursday but fend for yourselves the rest of the week! When I get home from work, I immediately start cooking. My husband picks the kids up from daycare, or they are home with one of our moms, depending on the day. I like to get dinner on the table by 5:15. We spend lots of time sitting and eating, but let’s be honest, the majority of the time is spent singing Baby Shark with my oldest or peekaboo with my baby.

We continue to sing through dishes being washed.

The First Lap: Play Time

This is our favorite time. My older daughter is a book addict and will happily read you dozens of stories, and her sister is scooting all over the place trying to grab toys.

The Second Lap: Bath Time

Typically, my husband will take our big girl upstairs for bath, while I bathe the baby in the sink. Pretty soon we will start doing their baths together.

Lifting two babies all day is my daily workout. No need for weights, cardio, or yoga…and who has time for that anyways?

The Final Lap: Snack/Play Time

This is the time of night that gets a little crazy. There are typically five different snacks being chosen as I am chasing my big girl around the house trying to do her hair. But really, what one and a half year old has this much hair and how did I get to be the lucky mother?

The Finish Line: Bed Time

Life will be so much easier when I can say the words, “Put your pajamas on.”

Endless kisses, hugs, I love you, and “night-nights”…and we did it! We crossed the finish line! Cue the finale music as we crawl to the couch and fall asleep watching a show we have attempted to watch for the last six nights in a row.
