Growing up in Westchester and living not too far outside of Manhattan, I grew up going to many Broadway shows. My dad loved going to the theatre so I went along too, and it’s stuck with me. While currently we aren’t far from Broadway, there are many local theatres that provide amazing Broadway caliber performances.

My first memory of going to the Westchester Broadway Theatre was many years ago to see Grease. I realize now how lucky I was to go as a child. I’m missing so much now by not taking the time to go as much as I’d like to. Luckily, I was recently able to see the Westchester Broadway Theatre’s performance of Newsies.

One of the best parts of the Westchester Broadway Theatre is that it is a dinner theatre. You don’t need to rush or make a reservation somewhere else. They have a great menu along with a variety of cocktails and coffees. And don’t forget, their timeless peach melba dessert, it’s delicious. I was able to have a lovely dinner with some other mom bloggers who I hadn’t met before and it was wonderful to have this chance to meet them and learn their stories.

Their famous Peach Melba!

Soon after dinner Newsies began, and I was thoroughly engaged. With the opening number “Santa Fe” performed by the main character, Jack Kelly, and his good friend “Crutchie,” I was hooked. Not only was the singing excellent, these actors can dance. They had some incredible dance numbers that had the audience cheering!

If you’re not familiar with the story of Newsies here is a synopsis from the Westchester Broadway Theatre: “Based on the 1992 Disney movie about the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899. Set in New York City at the turn of the twentieth century, Disney’s Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged “newsies” who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right. With help from the intrepid reporter Katherine Plumber, all of New York City soon recognizes the power of young people.”

I highly recommend going to see it and the kids will love it. It’s a great way to introduce them to the theatre as well! There are also some matinees depending on the day and ticket prices range from $59-$89 plus tax and gratuity. Also, there are children and senior discounts at some performances.

Please take a ride over to Elmsford and catch a performance of Newsies now through May 26th, you won’t regret it!
