How to Style Your Family for Holiday Cards

0

It’s that time of year again… Holiday card season. I highly recommend getting professional photos taken for your Holiday cards. Personally, we take ours in the fall, when it’s still warm out. An added bonus is it’s not last minute or rushed.

Pictures are a wonderful keepsake, a way to freeze time, and a great way for your children to look back at the fun times. Not only do I take the time to print and hang them in our house, I use them for photo ornaments as gifts. Remember, it’s only once a year your family and friends get your Holiday card, so you want it to stand out!

My tips for Holiday cards:

1. Location of your photo shoot.

Choose a location that best fits and/or describes your family. Somewhere simple and easy to get too. Outfit inspiration comes from your location. My family loves the beach, so we usually shoot there. Pro Tip: the hour before sunset is the most flattering light, as it creates gorgeous skin tones.

2. Wear something comfortable.

If you or the kids aren’t comfortable, it makes the situation miserable and more stressful than necessary. Also, it will show in the photos. Itchy or tight clothes will not go well. Pick something comfy but firm fitting clothing. Pro Tip: Keep it simple, no shoes.

3. Coordinate outfits.

You want everyone in unison and to have a good flow, so have the outfit colors and looks coordinate. Too many competing patterns will also make photos look busy. Stick with the same colors and tones. Soft tones photograph well; light neutrals, greys, and creams. Pinterest is great for family photo outfit inspiration. Pro Tip: I create a board every year for our Christmas cards to help me create our look.

4. Have fun.

I’m not a fan of posed family photos. Lifestyle photography is my favorite. The kids can run around, and a good photographer will make the photos truly reflect your family. Pro Tip: Don’t give up! Sometimes it’s the last frame captured that ends up on the card.holiday card

Please refer to our 2017 Photography Guide. All the photographers are great on this list. But my favorite is Stephanie Elliot Photography. My kids have behaved badly in a few of our shoots with Steph, yet she always finds a way to capture amazing photos. Over the years she manages to tell our family’s story beautifully and the sessions are always relaxed. I always have fun putting our outfits together and I love the photos Steph did for us!
