Mother’s Day 2020

Mother's DayWe all can think back as children, giving cards to our mothers on this occasion and remembering to say, “Happy Mother’s Day.” However, now there is new meaning since it’s something we get to celebrate as mothers ourselves. I never fully understood or appreciated that warm and fuzzy feeling until I became a mom. And in more recent years, as I grew into adulthood, this has become one of my favorite days because it evokes memories of the very first day that I became a mother.

I look forward to Mother’s Day each year because when the day arrives, I am most grateful for the greatest joys in my life: my children. I feel honored for the special day to be a recipient of this holiday’s love.

On this day, my husband and kids pamper me all day. It is always a day of my husband and children taking the initiative, rather than myself, in preparing my favorite dinner and drinks. Sometimes, I am fortunate to receive handmade gifts from my children, even something as simple as the “Best Mom” poster I received last year.

As we all are dealing with the immediate changes, and our country continues the battle of the coronavirus pandemic, this year, it is even more important we remain positive and make this Mother’s Day equally memorable for those we care about.

This year we will not be able to physically patron any restaurants or other places of entertainment that we would typically go to celebrate Mother’s Day. However, we can still be creative and find simple ways to show love to our moms. Luckily, in most towns and communities, we have many options for restaurants that offer delivery or curbside pick up. It is fair to say that most moms (if not all) would be delighted to enjoy a meal she did not have to cook from her favorite eatery.

Another simple token of love can include a family walk or bike ride. Enjoying the May sunshine and fresh air is good for the soul.

If distance or the circumstances surrounding the coronavirus separates you from your mother or a special loved one this year, you can easily mail a card, make a homemade art project, create and send a video message, or make that special phone call or FaceTime.

Mother’s Day will be special, no matter how it is celebrated.

Our work as mothers is 24 hours, 365 days a year, but it is work that I love. I look forward to this holiday as a token of family appreciation, memory, and love.
