The Love Languages of Little Ones

Love languages of little onesI recently got hooked on City Moms Blog Network’s podcast, Just Add Sprinkles. It’s a great podcast about celebrating little moments in motherhood and while listening to Episode 17: The Importance of Celebration, I was struck by a connection the hosts Steph and Michelle were trying to make – the concept of a love language. I had never heard of this, but apparently, it’s a thing. I dug a little deeper and apparently your love language is how you show other people how much you appreciate them. The more I thought about what my love language is (acts of service!) and how it manifests in my life, I began to think about what that means for my kids. I also began to think about what my own children’s love languages may be. But, we know that children have a much deeper need to be given the appreciation versus giving appreciation to others.

It’s hard to believe that school will be back in session soon. We will be entrusting our little ones (who have different love language needs) in the care of others (who have different love languages to give). It’s scary and to me, never seems to get easier. I always stress about how my kids will do with their teachers.

What are the love languages young children need? What do they look like? Here’s my interpretation if the five love languages were designed for little ones!

Praise:

What little kid doesn’t love to be told what a great job they’ve done, or how proud we are of them! Praise is definitely a need that some littles need more than others.

Touch:

A hug, a high-five, a pat on the back. Touch is a pretty powerful way to set a little one at ease or show them some love.

Time:

Some of our little’s greatest need is our time. Maybe it’s reading a book together. Or maybe it’s just simply listening to your child tell you about their day. They simply want us to be present in the moment with them.

Food:

There’s nothing like a purse full of snacks to show how this might be your child’s love language. Whether it’s a home cooked meal or a handful of Goldfish crackers, food is a not just a physical need.

Play/Imagination:

The simple act of play can be just what your little one needs! Legos, dolls, or playing on the playground, play is a happy little love language that some of our littles enjoy!
