So Long, Summer: Why I’m Ready for Fall

0

bye summerWhen September looms on the horizon, everyone starts to look a bit forlorn. They start to worry about summer coming to an end. They aren’t ready to give up the salty breezes, the scent of the BBQ, or the warm summer evenings outside. But I say let it go!

Here’s my list of things I won’t be missing as I set my sights on a warm sweater and a pumpkin spice latte.

The towelsYou all know what I’m talking about. Spending your days hitting the beach, pool, or sprinklers lands you in a serious towel situation. They’re hanging on the deck, the patio chairs, the backs of bathroom doors, and just about everywhere else. I’m finished with towels. I didn’t even know this many beach towels existed in my home. As a matter of fact, I never want to see them again until next June. Seriously.

The laundry: With all the towels in rotation, that brings me to my next complaint about summer- the laundry. Actually, I mean the never-ending pile of laundry. I swear I’m doing two loads a day, and yet the basket always seems to be full. There are bathing suits and beach cover-ups in heavy rotation, towels that seem to be eternally wet, and a plethora of sweaty clothing. It seems as though we haven’t even worn any clothing, yet I’m blowing through laundry detergent like it’s my job. I’m looking forward to the one outfit per day that comes along with the fall and winter seasons.

The packing: While we are so lucky to be in close proximity to beaches and pools here in Fairfield County, I certainly won’t miss all the packing that comes with a visit to one of these beloved places. We must tote umbrellas and chairs and an array of snacks and drinks. Let us not forget to bring a cooler for all those snacks and drinks during the extreme heat. That isn’t all. We have to bring along those glorious buckets and sand toys to every daily adventure. Did I mention the towels? I’m definitely ready to pack up just ONE bag of snacks and drinks and head over to the playground in the crisp fall weather.

The sand: The beach is great. I won’t deny it. What I have reached is the sand-tolerant threshold. As a matter of fact, it’s mostly because the sand doesn’t actually stay AT the beach. In fact, I may even have half of it in the back of my car. Are you getting my drift? The sand is on the towels, the tiny little feet, and of course, all over the blanket. I shake and shake everything out before we even get into the car, but you know how it goes. I might be able to build a sandcastle in my trunk if I tried hard enough. No.more.sand.

The sunscreen: Let me preface by saying that I fully support sunscreen. What I don’t support is trying to lather it on a squirmy little body every hour. Have you attempted to get a three-year-old out of the pool to apply sunscreen? Yeah, not a simple task. In other words, I’m looking forward to sending my daughter onto the slide with nothing but a sweatshirt and a smile.

Although summer is a season of schedule-free fun, I’m looking forward to getting back into the swing of regular schedules and dry clothing. So summer, it’s time we parted ways, but I look forward to thinking of you fondly during that dark and dreary New England winter.

Are you happy to say goodbye to summer? We’d love to know how you feel! Comment below!
