Fun Books for Young Toddlers

0

I was a bookworm when I was a little kid {now, more of a Kindle-worm}, so I’ve been anxiously waiting for the day to come for my daughter to show interest in books. It finally came! Until she was about 6 months old, I used to read to her every night while we rocked in the glider. It was beautiful and it was what I always pictured. Then one day, she decided she no longer wanted to read and rock, instead she wanted to go straight into her crib. My heart was crushed {but at least she wanted to be in the crib and sleep}. A few weeks ago, my daughter asked me to read a book to her before bed, and kept asking for “more!” I am pretty excited. Here are a few of our recent favorites.

1. Where is Baby’s Belly Button? by, Karen Katz
A lift-the-flap board book that is interactive and educational! It has very simple words and it’s easy to follow for a young toddler.

2. Clifford the Big Red Dog by, Norman Bridwell
My daughter loves anything dog related and she especially loves all of the Clifford books. The pages and images in this book are big, simple and everything is easy to identify. There are enough words on the page so that moms and dads don’t get bored reading it, but not too much so that it loses a young toddler’s interest. This has actual pages versus a board book, but no pages have gotten torn {yet}.

3. Good Night Beach by, Adam Gamble
My daughter recently got this book as a gift and she has wanted to read it {multiple} times every night since then. She loves all of the animals in it and enjoys making the sounds for each as we flip through. It’s especially a great book for this time of year when you will be going to the beach and can relate it to the book.

4. Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? by, Dr. Seuss
This is actually one of the first books that my daughter has taken interest in looking at by herself. This is a classic and so much fun to read through and make the sounds together.

5. 5 Little Penguins by, Sally Hopgood
This is part of the Five Little Counting Books series. I love it because we can also practice counting while we read. We actually picked this up as a souvenir from the Long Beach Aquarium during our first family vacation in California, so it makes it extra special.

Aarika Friend
Aarika lives in Trumbull with her husband, two daughters (2013 and 2015), and son (2020). Originally from Ulster County, NY, she fell in love with her husband at a UConn football game when she told him he had nice biceps and the rest is history. Outside of work and motherhood, she enjoys eating good food, sharing a drink with friends, summer days spent at Pinewood Lake or on vacation in Cape Cod, and mindlessly streaming too many shows with her husband. Her favorite time of day is early morning before her kids wake up with a hot cup of coffee and a good book.
