My Fairy Godmother = My Hairdresser

Some people have a therapist. Me, I prefer my hairdresser. There’s something to be said about someone who you have trusted for over a decade to do your hair. Since I’ve known her longer than I’ve known my husband, she definitely knows more of my secrets. In fact, I shudder to even call her a hairdresser because she’s actually more of a friend. She’s also a confidant, a therapist, a mommy guru, my go-to girl that I can text in a heartbeat and ask for help…we’ve even shared clothes! (Full disclosure, I usually end up crying in her chair at each appointment. Luckily she only charges me for my cut and color, not the therapy.)

Leigh and I met over a decade ago through a mutual friend. We’ve survived five different locations across all of Fairfield County, ranging from Norwalk to Stratford. Our lives have mirrored each other’s over the years. We got married within months of each other, have 2 boys almost the same ages (she has a little girl in between them) and oddly enough, our oldest boys both share some food allergies.

So what’s the big deal you might be saying? The big deal is, “A good man is hard to find, but a good hair dresser is next to impossible.” When I say good, I mean I can always trust her to make me feel like a million bucks. In fact, she’s like a Fairy Godmother; her scissors are her magic wand. With her “wand” she can grant my wish to become gorgeous. Hairdressers are the only people who can be brutally honest about how you look. They can call you out on cheating on them and do the exact opposite of what you wanted because they actually DO know better. Yet we love them more because of it all.

I am pretty fortunate to have found my “special someone,” but I know there are many who struggle and dread the time to get a cut, or have near meltdowns if they need to color their hair. My advice? Keep looking! Just like when you’re making friends or looking for a significant other, be honest with yourself about what your deal breakers are. For me, I don’t mind driving almost an hour, nor do I mind waiting for our calendars to sync up because our relationship is worth it.

Do YOU love your hairdresser or are you still in search of a new Fairy Godmother?

Maria Sette
Maria is a full-time mom, teacher, wife, daughter, and sister, who feels pulled in too many directions! Her older son Michael took over 24 hours to be born, and at six-months-old was diagnosed with allergies to dairy, eggs, nuts, soy, shrimp, and wheat…all after exclusively nursing because she was SO SURE that would help him be a healthy kid. Luckily at age 1, he began to outgrow some of his allergies. Fingers crossed the others will soon follow because that plus a husband who doesn’t eat any veggies and Maria always battling her weight makes for three meals to prepare every night. Luckily, Christopher, her younger son, is a cooperative eater! As someone who has always been committed to making positive change, Maria uses her privilege and position as an educator and mom to work toward a most anti-racisit, equitibile, and inclusive world. Recently, Maria has even started getting up at 5am to workout in her basement. (Thank you pandemic living!) She is addicted to reading chicklit on her Kindle app in the dark, most Trader Joe’s products, and watching TikToks.
