Don’t Forget Your Reusable Bags

Recently many towns in Connecticut have been trying to reduce the use of plastic shopping bags and encourage reusable bags. On August 1, 2019 a Public Act went into place for the entire state. The state requires that a $0.10 charge be on all “single use” plastic bags used at the point of sale. However, the towns can issue their own fees as well. The goal is that all “single use” plastic bags will be banned from the state by June 30, 2021. You can read all about the act here.

Even though it’s been a few months, I cannot be the only one having a hard time remembering my reusable bags! It is for the greater good of the environment and I’m totally onboard. Also, some of the places I shop give me a credit for bringing my bags. I just need to create some new habits!

I wanted to share some tips on how to remember them.

1. Try to keep as many bags in your car(s) as you can. Notice the “s,” sometimes I’ll shop and have my husband’s car and there are no bags, so make sure both cars have at least 3 or 4 bags. Also, if they are in the car and you forget to bring them into the store, you can leave your cart and go get them.

2. Make sure to put the bags back in the car! This step is critical because that means you’ll have them for the next trip. If you don’t drive, make sure to keep them by the door you’ll leave from or near your purse or wallet.

3. If you have a grocery list add “Bring Bags” at the top of it as a reminder.

4. Make sure to have smaller bags for quick stops to the pharmacy that easily fit in your purse.

5. Try to save some larger paper or older plastic shopping bags if you need to do some shopping for items other than groceries.

6. If you have room in your car, you can also forgo the bags and fill up some totes that you can bring in and out of your house.

I hope these tips help to remind you to take your bags! Let us know if you have any tips too add.
