Is there any better holiday than Mardi Gras to go crazy and have your kids make their own masks, hats and noise makers? The glitter, the sequins, the bright and shiny jewels…Here are three easy crafts for you and your children to make for your Fat Tuesday celebration.

IMG_6295Paper Plate Mask

Items Needed:

1 paper plate

scissors

crayons, markers or paint

glue

decorations like feathers, glitter glue, rhinestones, etc.

1 popcicle stick

Directions:

  1. Cut the paper plate in half and color on one side of one half.
  2. Cut out eye holes.
  3. Optional: Cut half circle along the bottom edge, between eye holes, for nose.
  4. Decorate with whatever you’ve got. Let everything dry completely.
  5. Glue the popsicle stick to the back on the far right or far left side for holding. Note: Depending on the weight of your decorations, you may need something heftier than a popsicle stick to hold up your mask. We originally had more jewels on our mask, but they were simply too heavy for the paper and popcicle stick.

Construction Paper Jester Hat

Items Needed:

Construction paper (any color is good, but purple, green and yellow are the colors of Mardi Gras)

scissors

pom-poms

Directions:

  1. Cut the base of the hat by cutting two 2 inch-wide strips from the longest side of the papers.
  2. Tape two ends together to form one long strip.
  3. Cut long triangles out of the other colored paper (approx. 6).
  4. Lie long strip on a flat surface and tape the widest part of triangles to the inside of the crown.
  5. Glue pom-poms to the tips of the triangles. Let it dry completely.
  6. Tape the ends of the base together, letting the triangles and pom-poms fall outward.
