My children bring home such beautiful art work, and it deserves a prominent place in the house that is more than the refrigerator door. I have found that transforming a simple frame into an easily changeable gallery frame is a great way to show off those masterpieces. The following project is inexpensive, simple, and quick. Even the non-crafty types will find this project pretty easy to do.
You begin with a frame. Ikea has fairly inexpensive ones in many different sizes. I was looking to repurpose this random art print that has been with us since before we were married. The frame is a huge one that could easily fit 2 – 3 larger sized works of art. Here is the before picture.
Step 1: Purchase some inexpensive fabric, cute, small clothespins, and hemp. I purchased all of these items from Walmart for under $10.
Step 2: Take the frame apart. Make sure the glass (or plastic) front is clean and dry.
Step 3: Measure and cut the fabric to just slightly larger than the glass/plastic part of frame. You want enough extra (just over an inch) to go over the back edge.
Step 4: Iron the fabric and take the wrinkles out.
Step 5: Wrap the fabric around the glass or plastic piece. You can use masking tape to hold it in place.
Step 6: Place the hemp in the front, very close to the top (about 4 inches) as it will hang down lower once the weight of the art work is added.
Step 7: Tape the hemp in the back with masking tape.
Step 8: Turn the covered glass/plastic piece around and make sure everything is nice and tight.
Step 9: Place back in the frame, covered side down.
Step 10: Add decorative clothespins to hang your children’s masterpieces and your kids’ art gallery is open for business.
Now you can change art pieces with ease, and your child will feel like a real artist with his or her work on display in a spotlighting way!
