When I think of Mohegan Sun, I think of gambling, spas, fine dining and concerts. I have seen families there, but never really thought much about bringing my sons, ages two and six. In fact, they’ve only been there as a stop for a meal while driving thru that part of the state. But this time I was offered the opportunity to go to a WNBA game with my family. FC Moms Blog sponsor, the Connecticut Sun, were playing against the Phoenix Mercury on their home court at Mohegan Sun. I’ve heard that some family friends love going to the world class basketball WNBA CT Sun games with their daughters, so I jumped at the chance. Connecticut Sun games are a fun and affordable night out for the whole family.
Since my husband and I go fairly often, we usually pay extra for valet parking. However, one of the perks you get with your ticket to the game is free parking! If you buy an affordable Family Fun Pack for only $70, you not only get four tickets, you also get hot dogs, drinks and popcorn for all four attendees. You can’t beat that! Even better, my son has multiple food allergies, but the vendors were able to work around them. (We have also eaten at several restaurants in the casino with great ease. Our favorite is Bobby Flay’s Burger Palace..best fries ever).
The Connecticut Sun (and the entire WNBA) is the highest level of women’s basketball in the world. The players on the Connecticut Sun are not only some of the world’s best basketball players, they are also well-rounded individuals and role models. This year has been a record breaking one for The CT Sun. In fact, last week they clinched a spot in the 2017 WNBA playoffs – the first time in five years! As UConn alumni, my husband and I were excited to get an opportunity to see some of our famous female players inspire the youth of Connecticut.
From the minute we walked in to the arena, you could feel the energy and excitement from the crowd. The number of season ticket holders was impressive, as is all the community outreach programs. The Sun cares deeply about the local community, and hosts a number of themed and sponsored nights each season to raise awareness and funds for important causes. The game we attended focused on breast health awareness, so the team was dressed in pink, as were many in the seats.
Throughout the game, and especially in between quarters, The Sun does contests, cheers, dances and giveaways to keep the audience engaged. My son and I enjoyed the music the best. Blaze, their mascot, works the crowd and goes out of his way to take pictures with anyone who waves him over.
This summer we’ve been to a few sporting events, but I can honestly say this one was the highest energy and quickest pace. It also had the nicest people working who were ready to accommodate as necessary. The Connecticut Sun definitely earned three new fans after the game who will be watching on Wednesday, August 23rd and Friday, August 25th to see how they end the season before the playoffs.
