Botox: An Exercise in Self-Care

0

As women, we are constantly working against the aging process. Wrinkles are the ultimate enemy. Unfortunately many of us start too late. If you search for ways to fight them, you get a list of creams, serums, and of course, Botox. When I hear Botox, I must admit I think of over-sized lips and Joan Rivers. Luckily those are the outliers.

Many everyday people are using Botox these days, and you would never know. Botox has many benefits. For example, botox can be used for anti-aging and maintenance. It can also be used to combat wrinkles, eye twitches, migraines, and even TMJ.

After doing some research and speaking with friends, I decided I would take the leap. CT ENT has two offices (Norwalk and Stamford), and is easy to make an appointment. To be honest, I learned a lot when I met with Dr. Heather Waters of CT ENT. I chose her because she is an expert in facial plastics and reconstructions, as well as double-board certified.

Dr. Waters and CT ENT not only perform facial rejuvenation procedures, rhinoplasty, and functional nasal surgery, they also do reconstruction of the face and neck for those who experience skin cancer. She’s also a local mom of three children, who wants to help women look and feel their best. “I am my own patient and would never recommend something that I wouldn’t do myself.” (Dr. Waters is basically another Super Mom!).

The Amazingly Talented Dr. Heather Waters

At our meeting, Dr. Waters explained how every patient is unique, requiring their own assessment and plan. Her goal is to prevent or delay the need for facial rejuvenation surgeries. A simple regimen of skin care, Botox, volumizing fillers, laser treatments and peels can help to promote collagen production, improve skin texture, and prevent wrinkles. She strives to make the Botox effect mimic a refreshed vacation look. “People should ask you if you had a great night’s sleep or are using any new creams or serums.” This was appealing to me because I rarely sleep through the night and am starting to feel like the bags under my eyes are permanent at this point.

Before

Still, I was a little worried about the possible side effects. Dr. Waters assured me that the side effects are typically bruising, swelling, and headaches. There is also the small possibility of general discomfort, as well as muscle weakness, which may affect muscles surrounding the muscle that was injected.

After applying a little numbing cream, I was ready to go. The actual procedure took less than twenty minutes. I did feel the needle, but it was no more uncomfortable than laser hair removal or waxing. The next morning I had a little bruising by one of my eyes, but other than that, no side effects. I had only told a few people so I could get honest feedback. Colleagues did say I looked refreshed, and when I told them about the Botox, they were amazed. Within 72 hours, my eyebrows were higher, my forehead had no wrinkles, and my crows feet noticeably less.

4 Days Later

Dr. Waters reached out to me over the first 7-10 days to make sure I was feeling ok and happy with my results. She even told me if I wasn’t, all her patients have the opportunity to come back within the first 10 days to get a touch-up. By the 10th day, I couldn’t believe the difference and nor could my friends and family!

As someone who never really thought about my wrinkles, this experience has been fantastic. I actually consider it an exercise in self-care rather than vanity. To anyone thinking about Botox, I highly recommend scheduling an appointment with Dr. Waters.

Maria Sette
Maria is a full-time mom, teacher, wife, daughter, and sister, who feels pulled in too many directions! Her older son Michael took over 24 hours to be born, and at six-months-old was diagnosed with allergies to dairy, eggs, nuts, soy, shrimp, and wheat…all after exclusively nursing because she was SO SURE that would help him be a healthy kid. Luckily at age 1, he began to outgrow some of his allergies. Fingers crossed the others will soon follow because that plus a husband who doesn’t eat any veggies and Maria always battling her weight makes for three meals to prepare every night. Luckily, Christopher, her younger son, is a cooperative eater! As someone who has always been committed to making positive change, Maria uses her privilege and position as an educator and mom to work toward a most anti-racisit, equitibile, and inclusive world. Recently, Maria has even started getting up at 5am to workout in her basement. (Thank you pandemic living!) She is addicted to reading chicklit on her Kindle app in the dark, most Trader Joe’s products, and watching TikToks.
