Body Back Week 1: Anything is Possible

The Sono Field House

“Am I ready for this?” I asked myself as I approached the Sono Field House at 5:30 a.m. I reminded my doubting self that the answer is “yes, you’ve got this”! I was given the opportunity to join the Body Back program offered by FIT4MOM Fairfield County, which meets Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:30 a.m. in Norwalk. The program runs over eight weeks and combines group classes, meal plans, and online support.

I entered the lobby of the Field House on Monday with a combination of excitement and nerves. I am excited to be a part of something that will help me get more physically fit but nervous that I wouldn’t be able to keep up. Before we began our workout, Shanae, our instructor, took the measurements {gulp!} of myself and the four other group members and snapped some “Before” photos. And then…she had us weigh ourselves {double gulp!}. When was the last time you had that much fun at 5:30 a.m.? But seriously, you can’t appreciate how far you’ve come if you don’t acknowledge where you started.

We quickly moved out of the lobby and into the Field House, where Shanae then announced that we would run four laps around the turf. 4 laps?!? Really?!? As a high school coach, I have consistently made four laps my team’s warm-up, but my stomach dropped to hear that I was now expected to do the same. This field was not as long as the 100 yards by 60 yards that my team warms upon, but still…I made it through the four laps in 7 minutes and 15 seconds. {My girls were very proud of me when I announced that I did a four-lap warm-up as well that morning}. The Monday session went by quickly as we did a circuit of exercises like push-ups and sit-ups, and we recorded how many of each we could do in 1 minute. It turns out, and I cannot do even a single push-up – yet.

We also timed how long we could hold a plank. Wednesday’s session was just as challenging, but I made it through with a smile. Throughout the sessions, Shanae is cheering us on and encouraging us to cheer each other on. She kept repeating our theme for the week – “anything is possible.” She would announce an exercise and remind us that we “can do anything for a minute” or “anything for 30 seconds”.

So, what makes Body Back special? Body Back is not just a workout – it’s a program. There are small group workouts as well as a meal plan. Sticking to the meal plan has been much easier than I thought it would as there are so many tasty and simple things that are included in it. In addition to the face-to-face time, there is continuous online support through a private Facebook group page. We communicate daily and cheer each other on – so much easier than trying to do it all independently. We’ve shared tips and ideas about maximizing our time outside of class. And guess what – if you can’t make the 5:30 a.m. sessions two times per week, there is an option for the online coaching while you follow the menu plan and workout on your own or with regular Stroller Strides classes.

A delicious and nutritious breakfast option.

I am excited to share all that I will go through over the next eight weeks. I can’t wait to highlight all of what Body Back offers. I am confident that this will help me get stronger, leaner, and fit more. After all, anything is possible.
