Beat the ‘Back to School Blues’

The end of summer and the beginning of a new school year can be a stressful time for both children and parents. For some students, the first few weeks of the new school year are exciting. It’s a time to reunite with friends, start new classes, and get back into the swing of things. However returning to school can also be a time of great stress. Separating from family members and meeting new teachers triggers a bad case of the ‘back to school blues’.

I get a sad feeling inside when the kids go back to school and summer ends. I’m thankful for summer and the bond it creates. As a family of five, we make the most memorable memories in the warm summer months. Especially going on vacation a few times and being together everyday, all day.

Here are five tips to help ease the back to school transition in your household.

Practice Going To Bed Early 

My kids have been staying up late all summer long. However, when the school bell rings, they need to definitely wake up much earlier in order to get to school on time. It may take a little time to get back on track. So it is a good idea to start the process of going to sleep earlier a good week before school starts. Even once school starts, the first few weeks try to go to bed early on the weekends too.

Make A Special Purchase

Sometimes getting your child excited about the new school year can be as simple as letting them pick out a special gift. If it’s that ‘popular’ backpack, or a special lunchbox, hey, if it helps them feel the school love, then buy it. Might make a world of difference.

Talk Through Anxieties 

Children might feel anxious about returning to school. Whatever the issue might be, open the discussion, listen to feedback, but don’t stress about it. 

Take One Day at a Time

The beginning of the school year can be overwhelming for many students and their families. Parents can remind their children that adjustments take time. Life might feel hectic and even out of control, but trust me, this is only temporary. 

Discuss Expectations 

This is a great time to speak about your child’s goals for the school year. What do they want to achieve in the classroom? It gives them something to look forward too. Be very supportive and help your child to think about goals that are realistic. 

It’s helpful to be back on a regular structured schedule when school starts. At the same time we’ll miss the days by the beach, pool, and playing at the park. However and and most importantly, being with my children in the summer all day from start to finish is what truly gets us all out of bed in the morning. They get big so fast, and then it’s all gone. So take a deep breath and relax. Before you know it, we’ll all be looking forward to Summer 2019, let the count down begin!
