Ain’t Misbehavin’ at the Westchester Broadway Theatre

Westchester Broadway Theatre, located in Elmsford, New York, has been offering year-round entertainment for 44+ years. Ain’t Misbehavin’, on stage now, is a musical show featuring the music of Fats Waller, a popular songwriter and performer from the 1920s and 1930s. The original 1978 Tony award winning Broadway musical was directed by Richard Maltby Jr., and so is the Westchester Broadway Theatre’s production.

When we first entered the theater, I noticed it’s unique layout, allowing everyone a clear view of the stage. Our table for four included two seats facing the stage directly, and two seats angled towards it. This seating arrangement made it easy to transition from a friendly conversation over dinner to focusing our eyes and ears on the stage when the show began.

As soon as we were seated at our table, we were greeted by our attentive waitress. Dinner is included in the ticket price, and includes a salad, entree, and dessert. As a vegetarian, my menu options are usually limited, but here I was served a large portion of eggplant parmigiana and pasta. Drinks are available for an additional charge.

Ain’t Misbehavin’s storyline is told entirely in thirty-one songs and dance, performed by: M. Martine Allard, Ron Lucas, Tony Perry, Amy Jo Philips, and Anita Welch. The simple set design includes a pianist on stage, and a five piece band in the background. The first and second acts were each under an hour, with a 30 minute intermission in between; the show flew by. The energy of Ain’t Misbehavin’ made it feel less like a performance, and more like I was watching five talented friends having a night out on the town. For a few songs, the audience even joined in on the fun, clapping and singing along.
