11 Best Streaming Shows on Netflix

Binge watching shows on Netflix is my guilty pleasure. There are no commercials and if there is a cliff hanger, you can watch the next episode right away. Plus, you can pause, replay and fast forward to your hearts content. For example, if you’re me and turn on a show after you put your toddler down for a nap, and end up falling asleep yourself 5 minutes into it, you can just fast forward to where you left off next time.

For less than the price of a movie ticket, you get a month of unlimited streaming of thousands of movies and TV series from the comfort of your own home. The winter is the perfect time to subscribe to Netflix, so I wanted to share some of my favorites.

11 Best Streaming Shows on Netflix

1. Breaking Bad (5 seasons)
I dare you to watch this show and not secretly want to start your own meth lab for extra income. If you haven’t watched this entire series yet, stop reading right now, do not pass go, get a babysitter for the kids and get your Walter White on.

2. House of Cards (Netflix original, 2 seasons)
Political drama starring Kevin Spacey as a ruthless congressman. You are going to have a love-hate relationship with Frank Underwood, but I promise that it’s worth it. Season 3 is premiering on February 27, 2015, so now is a perfect time to get caught up!

3. Orange Is The New Black (Netflix original, 2 seasons)
Known lovingly by fans as OITNB. I was totally skeptical at first, but I am obsessed with this prison dramatic comedy. Season 3 is rumored to premiere in June 2015…I’m counting down the days and hope that’s true!

4. Friday Night Lights (5 seasons)
“Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can’t Lose.” Eric Taylor stars as the head football coach for the Panthers in Dillon, Texas. This show will make you feel as if you are part of their lives, sharing their trials and tribulations.

5. The Killing (4 seasons)
If you like crime shows and a good mystery with twists and turns, give this one a try. You might recognize the star of the show, Miereille Enos, from World War Z.

6. Scandal (3 seasons)
If you want to understand why your Thursday night Facebook feed is all about Scandal, this is your chance to get caught up. Kerry Washington, AKA Olivia Pope, is a professional fixer that leads a scandalous life and drinks a bottle of wine each night. Her team of ‘gladiators in suits’ will not disappoint you with all of the twists and turns.

7. Grey’s Anatomy (10 seasons)
McDreamy. McSteamy. Enough said.

8. Private Practice (6 seasons)
A spin-off from Grey’s Anatomy that centers around Kate Walsh’s character, Addison Montgomery.

9. Gilmore Girls (7 seasons)
A feel good show that will make you laugh, but also pulls at your heart strings. It was only recently added to the Netflix streaming library.

10. Mad Men (6 seasons)
This show will make you wish you worked at a marketing agency in the 1960s.

11. Dexter (8 seasons)
Michael Hall plays a police forensics expert that moonlights as a serial killer. Don’t worry though, he only kills criminals. I definitely have a love/hate relationship with this show. If you’ve watched it to the end, you might share my same feelings.

Aarika Friend
Aarika lives in Trumbull with her husband, two daughters (2013 and 2015), and son (2020). Originally from Ulster County, NY, she fell in love with her husband at a UConn football game when she told him he had nice biceps and the rest is history. Outside of work and motherhood, she enjoys eating good food, sharing a drink with friends, summer days spent at Pinewood Lake or on vacation in Cape Cod, and mindlessly streaming too many shows with her husband. Her favorite time of day is early morning before her kids wake up with a hot cup of coffee and a good book.

  1. Great list! I have not seen them all but you definitely included some of my favorites. I will check out the new ones next time I need some binge watching! Thanks!

  2. I would also include Wentworth, a remake of the Prisoner series in the 70s out of Australia. If you are a fan of OiTNB, then this is a little darker, less self involved and more nuanced acting. It’s perfection.

If you have HBO GO, I would highly suggest Game of Thrones. It is perfect.
