October is here, and it is the perfect time to check out some spook-tacular Halloween themed stories. Cuddle up with your favorite little ones and read these wonderful classic tales.
1. Popcorn by Frank Asch
Young and old alike love to see what happens when Sam and his friends decide to pop all the popcorn that the guests have brought to his Halloween party. My mother used to read this book to me as a child, and my own children enjoy it just as much as I did.
2. Curious George Goes to a Costume Party by Margaret and H.A. Rey
The curious little monkey is at it again as he searches for the perfect Halloween costume at a costume party and ends up scaring the guests.
3. The Little Old Lady Who Wasn’t Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams
A classic, folktale that has great repetitive language. Your children can’t help but chant along with the little old lady.
4. Pumpkin Pumpkin by Jean Titherington
A classic story of the cycle of a pumpkin is told in a perfect way for inquiring little minds.
5. Go Away, Big Green Monster by Ed Emberley
A favorite for those in diapers, this story never gets old in our house. My kiddos love to make this little monster disappear!
6. The Humbug Witch by Lorna Balian
Another favorite from my childhood, my daughter loves the surprise ending as we travel through the day of this little witch.
7. The Spooky Wheels on the Bus by J. Elizabeth Mills
Who doesn’t love a spin on this classic children’s song? A spooky version will be the most requested story for the month of October!
8. Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson
How much room in on a witch’s broom? The simple, repetitive rhymes will delight children of all ages.
9. Dorrie’s Magic by Patricia Coombs
A vintage storybook that will provide nostalgia for grown-ups as they share this classic with their own children or grandchildren.
10. Eek-A-Boo! By Joan Holub
A lift-the-flap book that you will definitely not get away reading more than once in a night. Flaps for little hands and Halloween sound effects? Perfect for the young and young at heart!
Honorable mention: Miffy the Ghost by Dick Bruna. My children were meant to be European. They love Miffy, Pippa, and all the other adorable characters that the continent across the Atlantic produces. Read this story and you, too will be asking “Was it a good ghost day?”

My son read Creepy Carrots in school and is now obsessed with the book. It’s pretty cute.
