The First Day: A Mother’s Reflection

0

It is only fitting that today on Mother’s Day, we also celebrate my little guy’s fourth birthday. For each of my child’s birthdays, I am instantly transported back to our first day together. That first day is truly magical in my eyes, because it is one of the few instances where time seems to freeze and nothing matters but the new life you have created. There are no deadlines, no rushing, nothing to do but just love that new, beautiful baby.

Both of my children were born during the 4 o’clock hour just before the dawn of the new day. Perhaps that is why time seemed to stand still. I love everything about both of those days equally, and they stand out to me as the most amazing days in my life – nothing short of perfection.

From that first moment when I held my little one in my arms drinking in everything about them to the feeling like I’ve known them forever. It was as if life before them hadn’t ever existed. For me, that time as a little family of three before the grandparents, aunts, uncles and even siblings are aware that their newest relative has been welcomed into the world is euphoria.

Then there are the phone calls, the Facebook post, the emails – sharing in the joy with family and friends. Despite being exhausted and wanting a shower in the worst way, my face was in perma grin as I encountered love at first sight. Did you know, my little ones, I didn’t want to ever let you go? Did you know that I vowed to do everything in my power to protect you. The day I became your mother is truly my Mother’s Day.

My littlest of babies is four today, no longer the 5 pound 13 ounce peanut I held to my chest that magical Tuesday morning. But all the same, he has my heart, and I can remember our first day together where time just stood still.

Happy Mother’s Day, Mamas! Feel free to post a picture or message about The First Day of your little ones’ lives.

You can be sure that she fills those days with as many amazing activities and outings that she can think of to make up for the time that she is at work. In a distant life, way before babies, Shannon was an aspiring actress and musician. You can sometimes still find her leading sing-a-longs with her guitar at the kids’ playgroups or at her daughter’s school.
