A Thank You Letter to our Children’s Lovies

Dear Duck Duck and Tigey,

As the anointed LOVIES of our girls, you are both an integral part of our family unit. The unconditional love, support, and comfort you provide our children has been truly invaluable. The old adage is true that we don’t say “thank you” enough… but today we are here to sing your praises and express to you both how much we appreciate all that you do as our children’s LOVIES!

Duck Duck, old buddy, ole pal you actually joined the Miller family before Sofie graced us with her presence. You were a baby shower present from dear friends and apropos hail from Duck, North Carolina. You have been a true and loyal friend to our eldest and have had numerous excursions from the soft sandy beaches of Naples, Florida, to the freezing snow of our driveway, to the vinyl slide at Pump it Up in Norwalk, CT.

Even during the brutal double stomach bug pandemic of 2014, you stayed by her side day in and day out and even though your soft yellow feathers will never quite be the same, you washed beautifully. You are a vigilant nightmare eradicator, secret school backpack stowaway and enthusiastic backyard explorer.

And to our tried and true orange and black striped friend, thank you for being a fearless partner in crime to an energetic and precocious three-year-old. Lately, you have been through a lot and you took the 12 hours at Disney like a champ and never complained once. I wanted to sincerely apologize for last week when I dropped you in a puddle. Please don’t take it personally.

I was trying to carefully transfer my post -swim class sleeping child who weighs approximately 26% more while sleeping, and the combination of our two polyester coats made for a precarious situation. It came down to you or the child. I picked the child, but that doesn’t mean I love you less. You are more than aware of the consequences of waking the napping beast and if you could talk I think you would wholeheartedly agree with my difficult decision. Like your BFF Duck Duck, you wash beautifully and don’t look a day over two.

As lovies, you are both extremely special to us. You provide comfort and companionship when we cannot. I don’t know how many more days, months, or years you will be with us, as with most aspects of childhood there are no definites or absolutes, and we have learned to live each day as it comes. But I wanted you to both know that you will always hold a special place in ALL our hearts and you will always be OUR LOVIES!

I promise you this…years from now we can sit on the couch together, snuggle, and watch the entire Toy Story series (one through three, because unlike most series, I do appreciate each volume in this Disney classic) and we can reminisce about the good ole days of car rides, super tight bear hugs, goodnight cuddles and what a true honor it is to be a child’s lovie.

To all you Lovies out there that bring children so much joy, your job is often thankless and I am sure you have seen some unmentionable things (we won’t talk about the New Jersey rest stop incident of August 2015) but you are appreciated by all your charges and their GRATEFUL parents.

Warmest regards,

Mom & Dad
