A Mom’s Guide to Fairfield County :: October 2017

Finally, it’s time for crisp air, football, and sweaters – welcome October! Here is a list of family fun events to enjoy this month. This is in no way intended to be a comprehensive event guide, so if you have suggestions or any great events that we’ve missed, please leave a comment to let us know!

Bridgeport

  • All Month :: Find an adventure at Discovery Adventure Park. This month’s activities include Climb for a Cure on October 1, Bark, in the Park on October 7, and Fall Festival on October 21.
  • Saturday, October 7 :: Bring your kids to Home Depot to build a Fire House Bank. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a free certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last.
  • Saturday, October 21 – Sunday, October 22 and Friday, October 27 – Tuesday, October 31 :: Celebrate Halloween at Bass Pro Shops. Events include free photos, pumpkin toss (weekends only), crafts, sweepstakes, costume parade (Saturday, October 28 and Tuesday, October 31), and trick-or-treating (Saturday, October 28 and Tuesday, October 31). 
  • Saturday, October 28 :: Enjoy spooky activities and fun for the entire family at Discovery Museum’s Fifth Annual Spooktacular Event. Some of the events include a Pumpkin Chunkin competition, Exploding Jack-O-Lanterns, and a Mad Scientist laboratory. Costumes are strongly encouraged and children who come dressed-up will receive $1 off admission.
  • Sunday, October 29 :: Have a a spooktacular afternoon at the Beardsley Zoo for Boo at the Zoo. There will be hay rides, crafts, story-time, cool critters, and candy. Children under 12, in costume, and accompanied by a paying adult, will get free admission into the zoo.

Danbury 

  • Saturday, October 7 :: Bring your kids to Home Depot to build a Fire House Bank. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a free certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last.
  • Saturday, October 14 :: Head over to the Fall 2017 Danbury STEAM Fair for a celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math at the Danbury Library & Hackerspace. Free for all ages. There will be more than 30 exhibits by local makers, artists, companies, creators, inventors, and craftspeople that will amaze and astound kids of all ages. Activities include Robotics, art, drones, inventors, music, interactive demonstrations, 3D printing, food truck rally, circus acts and activities in the Library Plaza, and much more!
  • Saturday, October 14 and Saturday, October 28 :: Enjoy My Little Pony: The Movie a sensory friendly environment at AMC.

Fairfield

  • Sunday, October 1 :: Bring an appetite to the first annual Fairfield Food Truck Festival. The region’s top food trucks will be there. All proceeds to benefit the Fairfield Public Library.
  • Saturday, October 7 :: Bring your kids to Home Depot to build a Fire House Bank. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a free certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last.
  • Monday, October 9 – Sunday, October 15 :: Enjoy delicious food at Fairfield Restaurant Week.
  • Saturday, October 14 :: Join the Fairfield University Bookstore for all things Star Wars at Star Wars Reads Day. There will be live Star Wars action figures from the 501st CT Garrison on hand to meet and greet fans of all ages. Come dressed in your favorite Star Wars costume; listen to a Star Wars story read aloud; pose for a picture with your favorite character; and enter to win some cool prizes in a FREE raffle.
  • Sunday, October 15 :: Join the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce for their annual Fall Harvest Market at the historic Old Town Hall Green. The Green will be magically transformed into an outdoor, open-air shopping Market, full of vendors providing a huge array of different products, clothing, food and household items, to meet the interests of every shopper. There will also be well-known food trucks, offering the best variety of local foods for everyone to enjoy. 
  • Sunday, October 29 :: Trick or treat at Halloween on the Green. The event includes trick-or-treating, giveaways, displays in the historic buildings, food trucks, a bounce house, fun games, and activities. Exciting displays will be set up in the Victorian Cottage, Sun Tavern and Old Academy Schoolhouse! Put on your costume and prepare for fantastical fun.

Monroe

New Canaan

  • Friday, October 13 – Saturday, October 14 :: Join the New Canaan Nature Center for their 48th Fall Fair. We will have our traditional crazy maze, spooky stroll, pumpkin decorating, fire truck rides, apple sling shot, zip line and new this year will be fun carnival rides. Food, drinks, & snacks will be available for cash purchase on both days.
  • Friday, October 27 :: Get into the Halloween spirit by joining New Canaan Nature Center for Halloween Spooktacular. You will learn about and meet some creepy critters who remind us of All Hallows Eve (spiders, bats, snakes, and more), before getting the chance to make slime and having a one-of a-kind jack-o-lantern experience! Costumes are encouraged.

Newtown

Norwalk

  • Fridays :: This October 2017, Stew’s Hoedown will be transformed into a Hay Bale Theater to show a free children’s Halloween-themed movie!  Complimentary juice and popcorn is served to all.  The movies begin at 7:00 P.M., with seating opening at 6:30 P.M. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. The movies will be shown on Friday, October 6; Friday, October 13; Friday, October 20; and Friday, October 27. For movie titles and additional information, please see in-store.
  • Saturday, October 7 :: Bring your kids to Home Depot to build a Fire House Bank. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a free certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last.
  • Sunday, October 8 :: Watch pumpkin carver Lenny Calvin, former contestant on Food Network’s Halloween Wars Season 6, carve his elaborate Halloween-themed pumpkins.
  • Saturday, October 21 – Sunday, October 22 and Saturday, October – Sunday, October 29 :: Head over to the Maritime Aquarium for AquaScarium Halloween Prowl. There will be free admission for children in costume when accompanied by a paying adult. There will be face painting, special activities, and lots of safe (non-scary) family fun. 
  • Tuesday, October 24 :: Dress-up the kids in costumes and go to Stew Leonard’s in Norwalk to go trick or treating. Children can come with their own bags or Stew Leonard’s will provide one for them.  Stew Leonard’s famous characters, including mascot Wow the Cow, will be available for taking photos with the children at the stations.
  • Saturday, October 28 :: Have a BOO-tiful night of tricks and treats at a Magical Monster Mash at Stepping Stones Museum for Children. There will be live animals from Animal Embassy and food available for purchase in the cafe. Space is limited and advance registration required.
  • Tuesday, October 31 :: Bring your kids to Stew Leonard’s dressed in costumes (children aged 12 and younger) and receive a free small ice cream.

Shelton

  • Sunday, October 1 :: Enjoy a day full of family-friendly fall fun at Shelton Day.
  • Saturday, October 14 :: Enjoy a free fall festival hosted by Echo Hose Book & Ladder Co. 1 Auxilary. The event will have over 30 local vendors, raffle prizes from local vendors, food trucks, and children’s area with face painting, fall arts and crafts, fall themed games, Touch-A-Firetruck, trying on a firefighter’s gear, photos, and more. Food and soft drinks will be for purchase.
  • Saturday, October 28 :: Make spooktacular crafts at The Giggling Pig’s Halloween Crafting Party.

Southport

  • Sunday, October 8 :: Spend a Sunday afternoon at the culinary event of the year at Taste of Fairfield with great food, drink, and entertainment.

Stamford

  • Saturday, October 14 – Sunday, October 15 :: Celebrate the fall season with family and friends at Stamford Museum & Nature Center’s annual Harvest Festival Weekend
  • Sunday, October 29 :: Don your Halloween costume and head up to Heckscher Farm to trick or treat with your favorite farm friends! Follow the paths to find the “trick or treat” stations located around Heckscher Farm. There will be toys or candy at each station as well as nut-free options. Bring your own bag or bucket for all the spooky treats!

Stratford

  • Saturday, October 7 :: Bring your kids to Home Depot to build a Fire House Bank. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a free certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last.
  • Saturday, October 7 :: Stratford residents can enjoy admission to the Beardsley Zoo for only $5.00 per person with ID. You will get to meet and greet local officials as well as business and civic leaders, your friends, and your neighbors. 
  • Sunday, October 8 :: Show support for your fur babies at Stratford Animal Rescue Society’s 11th Annual Fall Festival to Benefit Animals. The event includes educational speakers, music, entertainment, 90+ people/pet vendors, food, microchip clinic, silent auction, contests, pet adoptions, and more.

Trumbull

  • Sunday, October 1 :: Celebrate Nichols Fire Department’s 100 years of service and learn about fire prevention with a picnic and open house. There will be fire department demonstrations, kid friendly activities, and more! Food and beverages will be available for purchase from a variety of food truck vendors on site.
  • Saturday, October 7 :: Bring your kids to Home Depot to build a Fire House Bank. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a free certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last.
  • Saturday, October 14 :: Shop for crafts at the Harvest Craft Fair at St. Catherine of Siena Parish.
  • Saturday, October 14 :: Shop all things crafted and homemade at Handmade Market at Christian Heritage School. There will be local crafts and artists sharing their creations, as well as food, face painting, and a therapeutic massage booth.

Westport

  • Wednesday, October 4 :: Celebrate National Taco Day at bartaco.
  • Saturday, October 7 – Sunday, October 8 :: Go on an outdoor adventure at the Earthplace Festival. Activities include nature crafts, animal encounters, pumpkin bowling, a swim in the corn pool, apple slingshot, mechanical bull, food trucks to purchase food, and more!

West Redding

  • Saturday, October 14 :: Watch a  historical demonstration of kettle corn popping, have a livestock encounter with a cow, and make a harvest craft to bring home at New Pond Farm’s Annual Harvest Festival
