A Mom’s Guide to Fairfield County :: May 2017

May is such a wonderful month for so many reasons! Flowers are blooming {thanks to April showers}, windows can be opened, the smell of BBQ is back in the air, and there are many great holidays to be celebrated, including Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, and Memorial Day. Here is a list of fun family events to enjoy this month. This is in no way intended to be a comprehensive event guide, so if you have suggestions or any great events that we’ve missed, please leave a comment to let us know!

Bethel

Bridgeport

  • Thursday, May 4 & Monday, May 29 :: On May 4, all police, fire, and emergency personnel receive free admission to the Beardsley Zoo with a badge or ID card for International Firefighter’s Day. On May 29, all active military and veterans get free admission; their families receive 20% off.
  • Saturday, May 6 – Sunday, May 21 :: Catch a performance of Cinderella at The Children’s Theatre at Downtown Cabaret Theatre. The show runs on Saturdays and Sundays.
  • Saturday, May 6 :: Build a flower pot to hold spring flowers to keep or give to Mom at Home Depot. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a free certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last.
  • Saturday, May 13 :: Go to Bass Pro Shops with the kids and grandparents to get a free photo taken for Mother’s Day.
  • Sunday, May 14 :: Celebrate Mother’s Day at The Adventure Park at the Discovery Museum. Moms climb free with 1 paid climber. When reserving use promo code MOM17.
  • Sunday, May 14 :: Celebrate Mother’s Day at the Beardsley Zoo. Bring your mother and/or grandmother to the Zoo on Mother’s Day and her ticket is on them.
  • Sunday, May 27 :: See Chris Rowlands Live at the Beardsley Zoo. Children are invited to wear fun hats and sing along with Rowlands on stage as he shares his self-penned songs about animals and their environment. Free with paid admission to the Zoo.

Darien

  • Saturday, May 6 :: Race model boats at the 25th Annual Tilley Pond Model Boat Regatta. Activities include “Georgie” the Clown, musical entertainment, and face painting. Kids are encouraged to bring homemade crafts for the homemade vessels race and pinewood “sharpie” boat kits will be available for purchase.
  • Sunday, May 28 :: Get decked out in patriotic gear, grab a lawn chair and head over to the Rowayton Civic Association Memorial Day Parade.

Fairfield

  • Friday, May 5 :: Celebrate Cinco de Mayo at Geronimo Tequila Bar & Southwest Grill. Daytime activities (starting at 11:30 AM) include an outdoor pig roast, giveaways, and evening activities (starting at 5:00 PM) include an outdoor Taco Cart.
  • Friday, May 5 :: Meet Cinderella at the Fairfield University Bookstore! Cast members from the Downtown Cabaret Theater including Cinderella and The Prince will visit the Bookstore for a special kids story time! Listen to Cinderella read her own story! There will be raffle prizes, a Cinderella coloring activity, and photo opportunities with cast members. Everyone who attends will receive a 10% off coupon for Cinderella tickets at the Downtown Cabaret.  RSVP to [email protected]
  • Saturday, May 6 :: Build a flower pot to hold spring flowers to keep or give to Mom at Home Depot. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a free certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last.
  • Saturday, May 13 :: Touch-a-Truck at Ludlowe High School. Special vehicles include local fire trucks, ambulances, construction trucks, and more. Food vendors and activities will be available. All proceeds will benefit Barnum Festival activities and scholarships.
  • Monday, May 29 :: Get decked out in patriotic gear, grab a lawn chair and head over to the Fairfield Memorial Day Parade.

Greenwich

New Canaan

  • Friday, May 19 :: Have a family fun night at the New Canaan Nature Center for Icky, Sticky, Smily Animals. Learn all about some super icky critters and get the chance to meet bugs, frogs, and maybe even one or two animals that will surprise you. All ages are welcome. Registration required.

Newtown

  • Sunday, May 21 :: Enjoy Family Fun Fest 2017 with Touch-a-truck, children’s amusements, craft show, food trucks, live entertainment, and more. The event is free, but there is a fee for the children’s amusements.

Norwalk

  • Thursday, May 4 – Sunday, May 7 :: Enjoy May the Fourth Be With You Weekend at Stepping Stones Museum with lots of fun activities to celebrate sci-fi, science, and space. Come dressed as your favorite character or show off your favorite sci-fi tee shirt.
  • Saturday, May 6 :: Build a flower pot to hold spring flowers to keep or give to Mom at Home Depot. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a free certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last.
  • Saturday, May 13 :: Enjoy casino games, Cuban cuisine, a live and silent auction, live music, and dancing at Havana Nights at Stepping Stones Museum hosted by The Weston Women’s League. Proceeds will benefit the building of a playground at Cesar Batalla School.
  • Monday, May 29 :: Get decked out in patriotic gear, grab a lawn chair and head over to the Norwalk Annual Memorial Day Parade.

Ridgefield

Shelton

  • Saturday, May 6 :: Kick off the Shelton Farmers Market Season with fresh food off the grill and live music.
  • Thursday, May 11 :: Paint the night away with your kids at one of The Giggling Pig’s Parent and Child Events. The theme painting is “Duck Days.”
  • Sunday, May 14 :: Celebrate Mother’s Day with a special wine tasting at Jones Family Farm. Wine tastings will be two for the price of one for everyone in your group or family when you come on Mother’s Day. There will also be a selection of Harvest Kitchen treats to pair with a glass of wine, as well as a special Mother’s Day sangria. No reservations needed.

Stamford

  • Friday, May 12 :: Go on a breathtaking tour through pre-historic Australia with Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo Live at the Palace Theatre.
  • Saturday, May 13 :: Listen to a special Mother’s Day Storytime at Barnes & Noble at the Stamford Town Center. “How to Raise a Mom” will be read and is a hilarious, heartwarming new story about raising a happy, healthy mom, filled with charming role-reversal humor, creative ideas and lots of love. Activities to follow after storytime.
  • Saturday, May 20 – Sunday, May 21 :: Head over to Stamford Museum & Nature Center for their annual Spring on the Farm Festival Weekend and meet the newest additions to the Heckscher Farm family! Activities include shearing of their flock of sheep, face painting, crafts, live music, a plant and herb sale, and local food trucks.

Stratford

Trumbull

  • Saturday, May 6 :: Build a flower pot to hold spring flowers to keep or give to Mom at Home Depot. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a free certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last.
  • Saturday, May 13 :: See and learn about birds with models, actual birds nests, bird eggs, and bird feathers at the Trumbull Nature and Arts Center.. Discover how to use field guides and take a nature walk to find signs of birds, as well as make 2 crafts: a pinecone bird feeder and a popsicle bird feeder, to attract birds to your own backyard.
  • Monday, May 29 :: Get decked out in patriotic gear, grab a lawn chair and head over to the Trumbull Memorial Day Parade.

Westport

  • Friday, May 5 :: Celebrate Cinco de Mayo and toast to the unofficial kick-off to summer at Bartaco Westport. Activities include face painting and live music by Acoustic Mafia and Mike Cusato Band.
  • Sunday, May 7 :: Calling all new and expectant moms, dads, and grandparents! Join Fairfield County Moms Blog at Bloom, where you will get connected with many valuable resources for parents in Fairfield County plus a swag bag full of goodies and the chance to win a bunch of exciting giveaways.
  • Saturday, May 13 :: Bring your little ones to make a beautiful terrarium filled with vibrant flowers and foliage at Terrain.
  • Sunday, May 21 :: Bring your little ones to make a succulent garden at Terrain.

Wilton

  • Sunday, May 7 :: Learn about small, thoughtful things you can do every day to go green at the Wilton Go Green Festival. Activities include face painting, dog parade, delicious food, live music, silent auction, animals, art, solar-powered merry-go-round, and more!
  • Monday, May 29 :: Get decked out in patriotic gear, grab a lawn chair and head over to the Wilton Memorial Day Parade.
