A Mom’s Guide to Fairfield County :: April 2017

Bring on April showers, so that we can see May flowers! April brings lots of Spring celebrations and, hopefully, lots of sun. Here is a list of family fun events to enjoy this month. Easter-related events are denoted by an asterisk (*) before the date. This is in no way intended to be a comprehensive event guide, so if you have suggestions or any great events that we’ve missed, please leave a comment to let us know!

Bethel

Bridgeport

  • *Saturday, April 1 :: Bring out our family’s adventurous side at The Adventure Park at The Discovery Museum’s opening day. Other events this month include the Manhattanville College acapella group on Sunday, April 2, Easter Eggs hidden throughout the park all day on Sunday, April 16, glowing pebbles hidden throughout the park from 6-10 PM on Friday, April 21, and an Arbor Day celebration on April 28 where the first 100 climbers will receive tree seedlings.
  • Saturday, April 1 :: Visit the Colorblends House & Spring Garden for opening day. The half acre garden located near downtown Bridgeport has over 40,000 spring bulbs flowering at different times and the renovated mansion has a pop-up art gallery featuring 8 local artists. It will be open to the public from April 1 to mid-May.
  • Saturday, April 1 :: Enjoy a free day at the Discovery Museum and explore the science of space exploration for Space Day 2017. Activities include rocket launches, live science demonstrations, and crafts.
  • *Saturday, April 1 :: Build a Bunny Basket at Home Depot. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a free certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorate pin while supplies last.
  • Saturday, April 8 :: Cheer on the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at Beardsley Zoo Night.
  • *Saturday April 8 – Sunday, April 16 :: Celebrate Easter at Bass Pro Shops with a free photo with the Easter Bunny and free crafts. An egg hunt for ages 2-10 will be held on Saturday, April 15.
  • *Saturday, April 15 :: Brunch with the Easter Bunny at Hub and Spoke. Brunch includes a kid-friendly breakfast buffet, giveaways, and treats. Reservations recommended at 203-345-9110.
  • Saturday, April 15 – Sunday, May 21 :: Catch a performance of Cinderella at The Children’s Theatre at Downtown Cabaret Theatre.
  • Saturday, April 22 :: Celebrate Earth Day at Discovery Museum. Activities include Earth and nature-themed coloring pages, special shows, and science demonstrations.
  • Saturday, April 22 :: Support LIVFREE at the Zoo. All proceeds will benefit LIVFREE and events include carousel, food trucks, bounce houses, face painters, euro bungees, safari train, music, and more.

Danbury 

  • *Saturday, April 1 :: Build a Bunny Basket at Home Depot. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a free certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorate pin while supplies last.
  • *Thursday, April 6 :: Enjoy Stew Leonard’s Danbury store 14th annual Easter Egg Hunt Eggs-Travaganza. Children will be given a map of Stew Leonard’s and a bag to collect eggs from costumed characters throughout the store, including Clover the Cow, Cynthia Chick, and Daphne Duck among others. The event is free to the community.
  • *Saturday, April 8 :: Join the Easter Bunny for a special Bunny breakfast at Stew Leonard’s Danbury store. Stew Leonard’s chefs will offer a breakfast of fruit, bacon, sausage, eggs, hash browns, pancakes, juice and coffee.   Children are welcome to take a photo with the Easter Bunny and Stew’s costumed characters. Reservations must be made in advance at Customer Service.
  • *Saturday, April 8 – Sunday, April 9 & Saturday, April 14 – Sunday, April 15 :: Ride the Easter Bunny Train at the Danbury Railway Museum. Admission includes a ride through the railyard on a vintage train, visit with the Easter Bunny in his special railroad car, small gift for children from the Easter Bunny, temporary tattoos, coloring station, Thomas play table, operating layouts, and museum exhibits. Reservations suggested.

Darien

  • Saturday, April 1 :: Ride at 11 AM with Joy Ride of Darien in support of the ELM Project. Each year, the ELM Project welcomes over 250 tri-state area children living with the challenges of HIV/AIDS and sickle cell disease to their summer program, Camp AmeriKids
  • Friday, April 14 :: Hunt for eggs at The Darien Community Association.

Fairfield

  • *Saturday, April 1 :: Build a Bunny Basket at Home Depot. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a free certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorate pin while supplies last.
  • Friday, April 7 :: Plan a moms’ night out at the Fairfield Theatre Company for an appearance by Jeff Leblanc and Liz Longley on StageOne.
  • *Saturday, April 8 :: Meet the Easter Bunny and hunt for eggs at the Annual Easter Egg Hunt presented by the Town Youth Council and Fairfield Parks and Recreation Department. Pre-school children to 3rd graders can participate. This event was originally planned for Saturday, April 1 and has been rescheduled to Saturday, April 8.
  • *Saturday, April 8 :: Hunt for eggs and make a variety of creative and unusual Easter projects at Giant Steps. Registration is required by calling 203-813-0755.
  • Saturday, April 8 & Sunday, April 9 :: Get your family portrait painted by Mack + Ro Illustration at the new Saltwater store.
  • *Saturday, April 15 :: Hunt for eggs (ideal for children 8 and under), make spring crafts, and visit with the Easter Bunny at CT Audobon. Registration required.
  • Saturday, April 22 :: Join the Fairfield Univsity Art Museum for a day of family activities, including arts & crafts and a child friendly gallery tour designed for ages 4-10. Registration is required.
  • Sunday, April 23 :: Find new treasures at the Fairfield Warde High School Flea Market. Free admission for shoppers.
  • Friday, April 28 – Sunday, April 30 :: Enjoy the McKinley School Carnival at Jennings Beach. Rides and games by Stewart Amusement, entertainment and food for purchase. Wristbands everyday for unlimited rides.

Greenwich

  • Sunday, April 2 :: Bring your family to discover an exciting animal adventure story as you walk through the weeds at Animal Tale on a Tail: An Outdoor Storytelling Adventure at the Audubon Center in Greenwich.
  • Saturday, April 8 :: Design mini flowerpots and decorate mini cupcakes and flower cookies at Citarella. Register at 203-861-6900.

New Canaan

Newtown

  • Saturday, April 1 :: Celebrate 2 years of EverWonder Children’s Museum. Events include eat-a-bug, face painting, temporary tattoos, discounts, raffles, science demos and a food truck.
  • *Saturday, April 8 :: Hunt for eggs at Dickinson Park Bandshell. There will be a special appearance by the Spring Bunny and DJ Austin Dailey, plus prize eggs throughout the hunt.
  • *Saturday, April 15 :: Hunt for eggs at EverWonder Children’s Museum.

Norwalk

  • *Saturday, April 1 :: Build a Bunny Basket at Home Depot. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a free certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorate pin while supplies last.
  • Sunday, April 2 :: Bring the whole family to the WEBE108 KidsFest at Stepping Stones Museum for Children at Mathews Park. Event includes bounce houses, hands-on activities, kids entertainment, face painting, demonstrations, caricature artist & more.
  • *Tuesday, April 4 :: Enjoy Stew Leonard’s Norwalk store Easter Egg Hunt Eggs-Travaganza. Children age 9 and under will be given a map of Stew Leonard’s and a bag to collect eggs from costumed characters throughout the store, including Wow the Cow, Cynthia Chick, and Daphne Duck among others. After the Egg Hunt is complete, parents are invited to take photos of their children with the Easter Bunny. The event is free to the community.
  • *Saturday, April 15 :: Partake in egg-citing egg-tivities with Benedict the Egg, including an egg creation station, egg “roll,” a musical performance, and fun egg-themed games and prizes available at Stepping Stones Museum for Children.

Ridgefield

  • Sunday, April 23 :: Bring the whole family to watch the heartwarming celebration of culture, honor, and the fighting spirit at the performance of The Song of Mulan at the Ridgefield Playhouse.

Rowayton

  • Saturday, April 15 :: Hop on over to the Rowayton Community Center for an egg hunt.

Shelton

  • Sunday, April 2 :: Sample six different varieties of vegan and gluten free cupcakes at The Common Bond Market’s Cupcake Day. All cupcakes will be 50% off, while supplies last.
  • *Thursday, April 6 & Thursday, April 27 :: Paint the night away with your kids at one of The Giggling Pig’s Parent and Child Events. The theme painting for April 6 is “Bunny Love” and for April 27 is “Campfire Nights.”
  • *Saturday, April 8 :: Attend Echo Hose Auxiliary’s Spring Fair. A free family event with over 30 local vendors and raffles, food and drinks to purchase, and a kids’ area including Touch-A-Firetruck, face painting, egg activities, and fire safety lessons.
  • *Friday, April 14 :: Join The Giggling Pig for a morning of creating, egg hunting, and a visit from a very special bunny for The Giggling Pig’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt. Reservations recommended. 

Southport

  • Sunday, April 2 :: Enjoy a special complimentary brunch at Artisan Restaurant and learn about the possibilities of newborn stem cells with Mark L. de Fazio, MD. RSVP here.
  • *Saturday, April 15 :: Join the 11th Annual Easter Egg Roll, following White House tradition, on Pequot Library’s Great Lawn. There will be an opportunity to decorate your own hard-boiled eggs, dance the Bunny Hop, meet the Easter Bunny, visit with a real, live rabbit, and to play carnival games.

Stamford

  • *Saturday, April 8 :: Hunt for eggs at the 13th Annual Heckscher Farm Egg Hunt at the Stamford Museum & Nature Center. Children ages six and younger bring their own baskets and hunt for hundreds of eggs that will be hidden all over Heckscher Farm. The gates to the Farm will open at 10 am, and eggs will be distributed throughout the two-hour event. Once a participant has collected a minimum of five eggs, they can be turned in for a goodie bag. Parents and older siblings are welcome to come along, but please be mindful that the Egg Hunt is for children ages six and younger only.
  • *Saturday, April 8 :: Join Designs by Lee for a Spring Open House with the Easter Bunny. Fun free family activities will include photo with the Easter Bunny, children’s craft, face painting, giveaways, refreshments, and Animal Embassy’s Amazing Ambassadors Interactive Area. The event is free with donation to the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County.
  • Saturday, April 22 :: Celebrate Arbor Day and Earth Day at a free, family fun event at Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens. All ages welcome and events include face painting, storytelling, riding in a Bartlett Tre cherry picker, crafting, and learning about bees, trees, and conservation.

Stratford

  • *Saturday, April 1 :: Build a Bunny Basket at Home Depot. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a free certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorate pin while supplies last.

Trumbull

  • *Saturday, April 1 :: Build a Bunny Basket at Home Depot. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a free certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorate pin while supplies last.
  • *Sunday, April 2 :: Autism Speaks will host “Sensitive Easter Bunny,” an opportunity for children with Autism and other special needs (and their siblings) to visit the Easter Bunny in a more soothing and sensory-friendly environment at Westfield Trumbull. During the “Sensitive Bunny” event, families will enjoy a quiet visit with the Easter Bunny supported by no overhead mall radio or audible music from nearby stores, no long lines, and lower shopper traffic. Advance registration required here.
  • *Thursday, April 6 :: Bring your favorite four legged friends (dogs & cats only) for their photo with the Easter Bunny to Westfield Trumbull.
  • Tuesday April 11 – Saturday, April 15 :: Enjoy a fun family night at the Trumbull Rotary Club Carnival at Hillcrest Middle School. Event includes fun Carnival rides with unlimited ride bracelets and food.
  • Saturday, April 22 :: Learn the basics of fishing as a family at the Trumbull Nature and Arts Center for Fishing 101. Ages 6 and up, registration is required.
  • Saturday, April 29 & Sunday, April 30 :: Get great deals on gently-used children and maternity items at the Just Between Friends consignment sale at Insports Centers.

Weston

  • Sunday, April 9 :: Celebrate Spring’s arrival at Lachat Town Farm with a Spring Egg Hunt. Search the grounds for colorful eggs, create a beautiful nature craft, spend time with their adorable baby chicks, get your face painted, and visit with the Spring Funny. Fun for all ages, free for children under 2 years of age. Registration recommended.

Westport

  • Saturday, April 1 :: Touch-A-Truck at the 12th Annual Co-Op Touch-A-Truck hosted by Westport Weston Cooperative Nursery School. There will be over 40 vehicles and more activities like the Fun Bus, face-painting, an inflatable slide, and the Roaming Railroad. A quiet hour (no horns!) will be 9:30-10:30.
  • Sunday, April 2 :: Watch a performance of Pete the Cat at Westport Country Playhouse. Recommended for ages 3 and up.
  • Saturday, April 29 :: Celebrate the arrival of garden season at terrain’s annual Dig into Spring Festival. Activities include a fully-stocked nursery, garden workshops, live music from Bedlam Brothers String Band, and fun stuff for little ones. The event is free, but additional costs may apply for some of the workshops.

Wilton

  • Saturday, April 1 :: Learn about the history and fun of April Fools’ Day at the Wilton Historical Society. Museum Educator Lola Chen will lead the fun with stories of hoaxes and pranks, and will likely tell the kids about the famous Swiss spaghetti harvest of 1957. Inspired by that famous hoax, the project of the day is growing spaghetti in a jar. Kids will help make their snack, Mud Pie.   • Saturday, April 22 :: Celebrate Earth Day at Woodcock Nature Center with activities for all ages – take an exploratory hike, hear a reading of “The Lorax,” and meet some native animals. The event is free, but registration is required.
  • Saturday, April 22 :: Pick up some new books at Wilton Library’s Gigantic Spring Book Sale Fundraiser.
  • Saturday, April 29 :: Celebrate Spring at the Farm with pancakes and Ambler Farm maple syrup, as well as a visit with Ambler Farm’s sheep, goats, and rabbits, a fun spring craft, and observe their resident sheeps’ wool shearing. Registration required.
