10 Reasons Why Moms Cry

moms cry

Before I had children I rarely cried. Oh sure, there were weeping sessions here and there over college denials, breakups, and other big life events, but day-to-day my eyes stayed dry and puffy free. I didn’t even cry on my wedding day.

Since becoming a mom; however, the tears just won’t stop. They hit me at the most obscure and unexpected times. Sometimes they spring from happiness, sometimes out of frustration, and sometimes I find myself blubbering and bawling, and I have no idea why. No one ever warned me about this side effect of mommyhood.

Here are 10 of the approximately 10 billion things that make moms cry.

1. When your Children are exceedingly and unexpectedly kind to each other

Our big girl took a pretty epic wipeout on her bike the other day. After she had a calmed down a bit she was sitting on the couch with her ice pack and princess bandaids. Our little one jumped up right next to her and stroked her arm and soothed “It is ok, I will snuggle with you and make it all better,” and kissed her knee. Cue the tears.

2. Vegetables

Yep that’s right ladies and gentlemen I have cried over a green vegetable. When we were facing a particularly brutal bout of picky eating I was brought to tears when my child consumed broccoli with no bribing, begging, or pleading.

3. Sweetly Singing Children

I am not sure if this is just me or other moms experience this as well, but sometimes when kids sing oh so melodiously my arm hairs get all prickly and my eyes involuntarily water. I had to walk away the other day when I found myself in the gym while the 3rd graders at our school were practicing, “Child of Tomorrow,” for the graduation ceremony.

4. Breast Milk

If it spills…I will cry. End of story.

5. Movies

Let’s be honest there are many, many, many motion pictures that cause me to choke me. Here is my abbreviated list of movies that I will never ever watch without Kleenex close by… Steel Magnolias, Terms of Endearment, Land Before Time, Family Stone, Step Mom, and Lion King.

6. Milestones

Crawling, walking, first time not wetting the bed all night, riding a two-wheeler…There is something about watching your children master a new skill that they couldn’t do the previous day that makes me weepy.

7. When you come home to find the laundry done and takeout ordered

It happened. It was amazing as it sounds. And yep the mascara ran ALL.OVER.MY.FACE!

8. TV Commercials

Seriously, do the people that write Folgers commercials work for Kleenex. There is totally some collusion there. Also, any commercial that involves children with pets, Olympic athletes gushing about their moms, and ones that focus on teacher appreciation. Anyone remember that Staples commercial where the husband buys all the supplies for his wife’s classroom? I mean come on, I can’t take that kind of emotion.

9. The Laugh Cry

You know that moment when you are standing in the kitchen and you can smell your dinner burning, your youngest is hanging on you like a koala and the oldest is screaming from the other room and you JUST. CAN’T! Anybody… I hope I am not alone here. You start to cry but then you realize it is just so funny, so you laugh and then you cry and then you laugh some more. And then you get your you know what together and open a bottle of wine and call the pizza guy.

10. Life

Mommy life can be brutal and exhausting and sometimes it makes me cry. Mommy life can be so amazingly fulfilling and I am so grateful for my family and kids that it makes me cry. My favorite pair of leggings came out of the dryer with a bleach stain and I cried. The wind blows and sometimes I cry. Being a mom is an emotional roller coaster and many times IT MAKES ME CRY!

What brings you to mommy tears?
