Homemade Dinner and Football {Date #4 in 12 Months of Date Nights}

football2Okay okay, I am going to admit that the football part of this date wasn’t exactly me watching football for several hours, BUT it did involve me sitting with hubby on the couch while he did. Please allow me to explain. Typically, Sunday football has virtually nothing to do with me other than it’s the only day of the week when my husband demands that the TV be on from about 11am until 11pm. I usually call myself a “football widow” from September until February because during those months, my husband becomes a permanent fixture on the couch any day NFL is broadcasting. On those days, I usually leave him to his passion and do other things outside or around the house. This month, I decided that I would cook us a nice meal and join him on the couch for our date after our toddler was in bed. Here’s how it went!

Sunday is usually a day where I go out with the girls and have some “me” time while hubby anchors himself to the TV and couch with our daughter. This particular Sunday, I decided would be our date night for the month. We are moving next month, so what better way to celebrate a date than with our last date in our current home. There was a recipe for Chicken Scarpariello that I had been dying to make, so I decided I would try it out on my unsuspecting husband and hope it turned out okay.

I spent the early afternoon and evening preparing our dish, which made the whole house smell so yummy. Armed with a little leftover white wine, I poured myself a glass and enjoyed preparing our meal. The best part was that we got to use some cherry peppers from our neighbors garden! I love it when we can use our own ingredients to make a meal at home. Since we live in a condo, we are able to share our harvest with the neighbors and expand our supply of homegrown yummies. As the pot simmered on the stove, I bathed my daughter and got her ready for bed.

With baby in bed and our delicious dinner just about ready, I served us each a plate of the good stuff and plopped down on the couch for some football. The recipe came out great and even though the TV was on (something I usually frown upon for dates) we had some chat time. This was probably one of hubby’s favorite dates because he got to enjoy the two things he loves the most in life (food and football) along with time spent with his wife. While I have to admit, I didn’t spend the whole time watching the game, I did hang out with hubby for most of the late game. Since I don’t share his affinity for football, I made a conscious effort to hang out and try to enjoy the game. I even tried my hardest not to ask too many questions!

Even if your hubby isn’t into football, you could do this with just about any sport. You can also do a game outing if you like to watch the game at the stadium. Since we found ourselves wanting to spend a little less money with a new mortgage looming on the horizon, this was a pretty good choice. All you need is some wine, a homemade recipe (or takeout if you don’t like to cook) and some quality “chill” time together.

What kinds of fun sports events have you enjoyed with your hubby?
