Feminine Rejuvenation {what you need to know}

What mama doesn’t want to feel rejuvenated!? But when it comes to our lady parts some of us get a little embarrassed. That’s why Fairfield County Moms Blog sponsor, Jandali Plastic Surgery is answering all of our questions about feminine rejuvenation. You know you are curious….

Feminine Rejuvenation

What is feminine rejuvenation and what procedures does it encompass?

Feminine rejuvenation is an all-inclusive term used to describe rejuvenation of the external and internal female genital area. Women want to restore the younger appearance and the sensations they had before pregnancy, childbirth, aging, hormonal changes, and weight gain or loss.
In office non-surgical treatments of the labia and vagina are performed for external tightening for skin laxity and wrinkles, as well as internal tightening for vaginal looseness.

Jandali offers ThermiVa and Viveve which both use radiofrequency (not lasers) and have minimal to no downtime. In addition, these treatments improve vaginal lubrication, orgasmic dysfunction, and stress urinary incontinence. Surgical procedures include labiaplasty, which is trimming of long, large, or uneven labia minora. Women who have wrinkles and laxity of the labia majora can undergo surgical tightening of this area. Other surgical procedures include clitoral hood reduction and fat transfer to the labia or mons.

Why has this trend taken off?

I think the number one reason is increased patient awareness that something can be done. Women know what they look like down there and want to restore themselves to how they looked and felt before pregnancy and childbirth. Also, with the current trend being hairless bikini areas, the appearance of the area is much more visible to women and their partners. Combine this with easy access to photos on the internet, and women are starting to think of the labial area like any other cosmetic area, like their breasts, abdomen, etc.

Do you think social media has increased awareness of feminine rejuvenation?

Social media has definitely also had an impact as women hear and see high profile women openly discussing vaginal and labial procedures. Women feel empowered and less embarrassed to discuss their concerns about the external vaginal appearance.

Other than the cosmetic appearance, can you discuss the functional reasons women undergo feminine rejuvenation?

For many women, their concern is not the appearance of the area. Even for women who haven’t had children, the effects of aging and hormonal changes on vaginal and sexual health are concerning for women. Things that could once only be improved with hormones or surgery, such as vaginal dryness and stress incontinence, can now be treated with painless non-surgical office procedures such as ThermiVa and Viveve.

To meet this increased demand for all forms of feminine rejuvenation, both internal and external, we formed The Feminine Rejuvenation Center of Connecticut. Our female staff, including Physician Assistants and Registered Nurses, are all certified and perform the non-surgical treatments. We work with multiple local ObGyn physicians to obtain clearance before our treatments, making safety our priority.

What procedures do you perform in your office?

We offer a full spectrum of surgical and non-surgical procedures. The most common surgical procedures are labiaplasty, clitoral hood lifting and reduction, and tightening of the labia majora. Most of these can be performed in the privacy of our office procedure room under local anesthesia. We use a long acting numbing medication called Exparel® which is remarkable in making labiaplasties almost pain-free.

We also offer ThermiVa, which is a non-surgical treatment which uses radiofrequency to gently heat the external labia as well as the internal vagina. ThermiVa is a series of three treatments a month apart, and it increases blood flow and stimulates collagen formation and remodeling. ThermiVa is used to treat external skin laxity and also vaginal tightening. ThermiVa helps with vaginal dryness and vaginal atrophy, which is thinning of the vaginal tissues with aging and menopause. Many women have told us they no longer need to use lubrication during sexual activity and no longer use vaginal estrogen cream.

Our newest device is Geneveve by Viveve, which also uses radiofrequency for gentle heating of the tissues. We are the only practice in Connecticut offering Viveve. It is used internally only and is a one-time treatment, so it is different from ThermiVa. In addition, it is used to help treat mild to moderate stress urinary incontinence, which is urine leakage when coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercising. We have had great results and amazing feedback, as urinary incontinence affects so many women after pregnancy and childbirth.

When are results seen with the non-surgical vaginal treatments and how long do they last?

In some women, results are seen immediately in the few days after treatment. Most patients notice results within a few weeks after treatment. The full result after collagen formation and remodeling occurs is 2-3 months after treatment. Both treatments last about one year and then maintenance treatments can be performed when symptoms return.

Are these non-surgical vaginal treatments painful?

The non-surgical treatments, like ThermiVa and Viveve, require no anesthesia. They both use radiofrequency for gentle heating of the tissues. Viveve uses a patented cooling system that cools at the same time that it heats for added comfort. They have almost no downtime and patient can resume exercise that day and sexual activity the next day.

We specifically use our two radiofrequency treatments (ThermiVa and Viveve) because they are not laser vaginal treatments. Laser vaginal treatments such as diVa, FemiLift, and MonaLisa Touch, resurface the vaginal mucosa with laser energy, often a CO2 laser. This leads to more downtime and potential scarring of the vagina. In addition, laser energy is just at the surface, where radiofrequency energy can penetrate much deeper, helping with orgasmic issues and stress urinary incontinence.

What are women saying and what kind of feedback do you get?

Women are overall highly satisfied. Women who have long labia that irritate them or show when wearing certain tight pants are incredibly pleased with labiaplasty results and much more comfortable. Women state they are much more comfortable and self-confident around their partners after things have been nipped and tucked down there. In addition, women are excited to know there are nonsurgical options for vaginal laxity, vaginal dryness, orgasmic issues, and stress urinary incontinence. ThermiVa’s motto is “Reclaim, Restore, Revive” and I think most women feel this is true with these treatments.
