Fall Fun: Apples!

imageApples! I love apples so much that I actually have ‘an apple a day.’ My children also love apples. My son eats them alone, shaken with cinnamon, or his favorite, with peanut butter. My daughter likes them plain or in applesauce form. We always have apples ready to eat, and I make applesauce often.

One of my favorite activities of the year is apple picking. We usually go to Silverman’s Farm in Easton, but we decided to go north a little bit, and make a day out of it this year. Instead of going picking on a busy weekend, my husband, my sister, and I all took a day off work and took the kids out of daycare and drove up to Bishop’s Orchard in Guilford. We parked at the main market area and walked the half mile to the orchard as it was a beautiful day outside. Once at the orchard, my son immediately spotted a cooler with apple cider; because it was a special day we bought some for him.

There were about ten types of apples to pick the day we were there. What was nice was that we didn’t have to pay for a bag, but instead paid by the pound (which was less expensive than buying them at the grocery store). They gave us a handout that had all the apples they grow and what they are best for. My favorite apple is Honey Crisp, but those were not available for picking; however, I was able to read the handout and find that Empire apples are similar. And they are so yummy! I knew that I would be cooking with the majority of the apples, so we mostly picked in the rows that had the best types for that.

After picking the apples, we went back to the main area and looked at pumpkins, llamas and goats. We went into the market, bought some lunch, and ate at the picnic tables. After a day full of fresh air, picking apples, running through orchards, looking at animals, and lunch, the kids (and adults) were exhausted. Both kids fell right asleep on the way home. But that wasn’t the end of the day…

We immediately started baking with the apples when we got home. Here are some of our favorite apple recipes:

Apple Meatball Kebobs

Apple Sausgae Stuffing Bites
