Ice-Skating in July {Date #2 in 12 Months of Date Nights}

0

Date #2 did not start out as an ice-skating date when I created the 12 Months of Date Nights to give to my husband.  While I had ice-skating as a date night, it wasn’t scheduled until February. That was, of course, until the little Groupon alert came up on my phone for a deal I couldn’t pass up! Since the Groupon was for ice-skating and was expiring in October, I figured I would swap our original July date for the February date and bring a little winter to the hot month of July. My husband was not initially amused by this idea, as he hadn’t been on ice skates in a good 20 years. The eternal optimist, I decided to grab some Advil on the way out the door and hope for the best!

Our plan was to hit the ice rink for their “open skate” on a Friday night and then head to the restaurant right inside for a bite to eat and a much-needed adult beverage. I hadn’t been ice skating in Fairfield County yet, so I was eager to try out my skills on a new rink (for the record, these skills I speak of are not of the Olympic variety). When we arrived on that hot July evening, I realized that the “open skate” had just ended for the summer. There wasn’t a soul in sight except for a few people leaving the ice after practice. My whole night was a wash and I began to wonder what we might do instead.  Since we were already at the rink and we were both hungry, we figured we would check out the restaurant/bar upstairs from the rink.

One of my mommy super powers is to be flexible. Sometimes, I would like to call my self from a few years ago and indicate the flexibility is a pretty good skill to have, but I digress. Hungry and thirsty, we grabbed some yummy food and had actual conversation without interruption. Also, our meals were hot and I was able to eat mine without simultaneously catching crumbs and small pieces of food from the toddler sitting next to me. Yes, it was pretty amazing!

Since the restaurant was closing, hubby and I had to come up with our next stop for the evening. We usually like to stay out for a few hours when we have a babysitter and this night was no exception. Despite the ice-skating fail, we ended up having a lovely evening and I was so happy that we were able to have dinner out and some time to ourselves. While my husband was pretty ecstatic that I wasn’t able to get him on the ice, I still have that groupon and plan to cash it in another evening. He’s not in the clear just yet. Open Skate returns in September, so watch out for us on the ice!

Be sure to check back in for our Date #3 in August!  What are some fun local places you have gone for a summer date night?
