Celebrating Grandparent’s Day!

0

grandparentsGrandma, Grandpa, Nana, Papa, Nonna, Nonno, and in my house Cha-Cha, Papa, Deedee, and Grandpa Boo, are all names for our children’s favorite people…..grandparents! My husband and I are fortunate to have two sets of loving, local, and supportive grandparents for our children. They are always there when we need emotional support, babysitting, and of course, simply loving our children as much as possible! Grandparent’s Day should be celebrated all year long.

I always find myself leaning toward homemade gifts for grandparents because it means so much more to know that my kids put their hearts into creating something special for them. It’s also something that can be treasured and not something that will get tossed aside in years to come. Here are some great ideas for DIY gifts to celebrate the grandparent in your life!

Conduct an Interview

Have your child(ren) ask about their grandparent’s family, childhood, interests, etc. For example, How many brothers/sisters do you have? Also, ask them questions that someone would ask your child, such as where do you go to school, what was your favorite subject, who were/are your best friends. In addition, they could ask about favorite activities when they were younger and currently. Brainstorm questions with your children and see what they would like to know about their grandparents. If you are struggling with questions, Pinterest has a bunch of free interviews that you can download as well!

Handprint Crafts

There are so many great gifts for Grandparent’s Day to make using your child’s handprint. My kids decorated a pot for my mom (Deedee) for Mother’s Day. I used my son’s hands to make flowers and my daughter’s baby feet to make a butterfly! It came out really cute and was so easy (and inexpensive) to do! Another idea I love is putting a handprint on a potholder! My son LOVES to help cook and always makes pizza with Cha-Cha when he is with her. She would love a potholder with his hand on it. Get a plain colored potholder or mitt. Using acrylic paint, cover your child’s hand and put their handprint in the middle. You can put their name, the year, or “Helping Hands” are all great additions to make it a little more personal!

Picture Crafts

Another great idea is using pictures of your child or a family photo for a project. Your child can decorate a simple wooden frame, either using fingerprints to make insects or simply letting them paint/decorate freely! Another great picture craft is making coasters for Grandparents. Find various pictures to use and get a bunch of 2″x 2″ plain tiles from your local hardware store. Cut the pictures the same size as the coaster (or trace it), and using modge podge, glue the picture onto the coaster. Once dry, put another layer of modge podge on top of the picture to create a barrier between the picture and moisture. These make great gifts for Grandparent’s Day because they are simple to make and make great keepsake items!

There are so many ways to celebrate grandparents every day! My kids love their grandparents so much. The time they get to spend together is cherished by both generations!
